If I were PM for one year...

Casual Observer

Ooh! I like this one...

JOB #1
Build a comprehensive 25 year plan for the future of the Bahamas

- Make it bipartisan and including of both political parties (& Kenyatta)
- Seek assurance that the plan will be carried forward regardless of the ruling party

Tafadhali

good thread alert!

amend the anti- discrimination legislation against women
legalize gambling
legalize prostitution and marijuana consumption (they are victimless crimes)
put in place sound environmental policy and programs to ensure our country is on a green path...
mandate that school kids must know how to swim and sail before h.s. graduation
amend legislation to allow the P.M's cabinet to be appointed (a competence issue)

I could go on and on...

oh and legalize abortion too...

Sapadilly

organize a youth worker programme in the country.

I think Taff made a point about non-partisan cabinet appointments, that is a great idea, if the PM HAD THE chutzpah to pull it off. It would require a constitutional amendment.

I like the youth bill idea.

Grouper84

my 1 year would start out like this. first i would go into the goverment and private schools of our country with the carbinet and listen to the students and hear their concrens. they is are future generation and they can ask questions to us as well and along with the meeting of other areas of society we will draft together a youth bill for the young people of this country. next on my agenda is to change the cirrclumn of education from the british standard to the american standard to help bring an effecient system of learning and also do a seminar to retrain teachers in new stanadard as well so they can be more prompt and work efficent in teaching it and lastly i would do an economic stimulus package for business industry of the country so that their is more money by the government during a slow period like we have now and show the country we are a very caring and loving government and we are reching out to every bahamian may it black or white.

Clancy Wiggum

1) Tax the numbers man dem - use the money for education and youth programs;

2) technologically upgrade government services;

3) renovate the hospital;

4) restrict the number of cars per household;

5) Legalize abortion.

Chancellor

Increase local government powers and elevate the laws to the constitution. Give Nassau its own City government, expand the Boundaries of the City of Nassau to include up to Goodman's Bay and bordering fox Hill, and divide the remaining urban area into seperate incorporated districts eg. Fox Hill, Gambeir, South Beach....at least four districts with their own elected councils. Central government would now have more resources and time to deal with more critical and relevant policy like foreign affairs, trade, and defence, and education.

Since it is only one year, begin the process of swaping diesel energy infrustructure for alternative energy options, solar being the main option. Starting with the family islands. Sell workable equipment to other countries that need plain old energy like Haiti and other carribean states. Send top Bahamian engineers to the nordic countries to learn and study the use of waves for energy. If I had more time they would return with foreign expertiese and personell to map out a plan to harness the wave energy, perhaps in the area of Andros, GB and Eleuthera.

Sell off Bahamasair if it still remains our national mosquito.

Well in that case I will turn the country back over to the UK...

SunnyJohn

I'd form a "BAHAMAS 2035" bi-partisan group to explore and examine every single facet of Bahamian development just like they did in Trinidad.

Then we would publish and legislatively PASS the document ensuring our commitment.

EVRY Bahamian would be asked to fill out a questionniare with their concerns MUCH like the census, but even more detailed!

The findings of the various groups (comprised of experts, eggheads and good ole common folks with horse sense) would be compiled, collated, copied and distrubuted nationwide. Talks on the plan,"BAHAMAS 2035" would be broadcast on TV and RADIO. EVERY person living in the country would be FULLY informed of our goals.

If da Brit dun warn us I sure da US might take us if we offer dem 100K acres a prime land ta dump dey garbage and run dey submarines fa war games....

Good plan grouper.... we do need to actually talk to the kids...

You would make a good youth liason....

TOPS on that list would be EDUCATION REFORM!

G_pally

Hang all convicted felons especially all those repeat offenders
These streets got to fix so that would soon be a priority
Revamp the entire police force because crap...some of them dirty as hell
Defense force needs to get serious so ill work with that
Our children are definetly a problem...no idea (how do u propose we deal with that)

Pharoah

Legalize Gambling and then mandate that a percentage be given to social programs and the countries infrastructure... We need a PM with balls to do what is right. I KNOW IT WILL BE A out cry from the church but after awhile when the church see that they will benefit from it's social outreach, all will again be quiet on the eastern front.

Truthseeker

1) I would first SCRAP General Orders (The policy, rules and regulations that govern civil servants.

2) Reduce the civil service by 50% over the the course of 5 years.

3) Give more individual powers to local governments

4) Reduce tourism annual budget and invest that money in retraining displaced government workers in IT...

5) Sell Bahamasair and ZNS and use the savings to invest money in charter schools for the kids and the Ministry of Education.

6) Sell Bec, BTC, and all government owned shares in private companies and balance the budget.

7) Reduce the number of parliamentary seats to 20.

I wont be looking to be PM long term..there are smarter people than me who can probably do a much better job. If one term is all I get, then I can hang out with Perry...at least we will have something in common.

I would also

1) Abolish currency restrictions

2) Refurbish Nassau/Bay st and clean up over the hill areas of garbage

3) Rrefurbish historical sites and make them more local and tourist friendly

4) Get the government out of the business of structuring and negotiating HOA ad hoc and have one plan in place for every investor foreign or domestic.

5) Reduce the powers of the PM.. at the end of my tenure.

Androsann

I would

1. Appoint a whole slew of magistrates, judges and prosecutors (even if I have to import them) set up temporary courtrooms on all islands (tents if necessary) and clear the backlog of both civil but more importantly criminal cases.

2. I would also begin the construction of a new jail on one cay somewhere to put all the now convicted criminals (they can help build it under the supervision of the RBDF)

3. Build a proper residential college of higher education, where all students had to be resident for at least the first year, regardless of which island it was on.

4. (This one is going to be controversial) Raise the school leaving age to 18, Introduce a national competency certificate for graduation making it mandatory that every student has a trade/craft/career training. Failure to qualify for graduation would result in mandatory participation in a National Service programme.

Extend the school day to 5:00pm, no student of primary age to leave school unless accompanied by a parent/guardian. All students of High School age to be bussed to and from school

5. Any student who is in any type of disciplinary problem at school would have to be accompanied by a parent in school who will shadow them for at least 1 day or longer depending on the situation. It's time parents actually took responsibility for their children!

6. Introduce totally free family planning advice/contraceptives available to all males and females, 16 years and over

Grouper2

In a nut shell: My government would be 1 that THINK OUT SIDE THE BOX. Any decision make to spend the Bahamian peoples money will be on permanent ventures. example: tourism advertising expenditure will be cut by 50% that 50% taken from tourism will be put in Farming. Tourism is temp.fix for our economy but farming is permanent. The defense force will be fully equip. to proctect these Bahama island by LAND, AIR AND SEA. Remove the prison from New providence and place it on a cay near where the illegal immigrants enter. The monies that is spent on repatration will be used to build homes for them to live (IN EACH ISLAND)so they can farm the land, that way they pay for them to go back home.(NO MORE FREE RIDE).

Any investor who want to invest will have to spend his money and bring his
plan to fruiation, before he is given any concessions. In my government if i is the HNIC and am found guilty of any wrong doing, I must be sent to jail.

Prosperity 1

Find a way to breathe new life into the economy by investing in infrastructure, education and employment. Also find ways to diversify the economy as oppose to hanging our basket so heavily on tourism.

I would staff my office and government with the best people. Personal loyalty is a consideration, but there are more important ones. Credibility, for instance. Experience. A serious demeanor. Open-mindedness. One of Christie's biggest failures was in choosing his people.

I would hold parents or guardians accountable for their children up to age 17

I would have a three strikes and you're out program for the lesser of the capital offences, on the third strike you go to jail for good, because you would have proven that rehabilitation for you is hopeless.

Make sure that all laws are enforced, from littering to hanging.

See to it that all capital cases are tried within a month of a person being charged, as much as possible.(Includes building new courts, hiring more judges, etc)

Invest in the resources we need for the protection of our borders

Sell all government corporations

GB-Bahamian-Boy Administration would,

HealthCare
1) Work to towards introducing a two-tire system of Universal Healthcare and Privatized Health care
2) Introduce a comprehensive Health Insurance plan
3) Increase Government Budget for the development of new medicines and cures

National Security
1) Introduce Island Community Crime Prevention Projects
2) Established a National Security Alliance to partner with the Police Force and work towards having late night officer patrol in communities

4) Using one of the uninhabited Islands and establish “Prison Island” which be host a new state-of-the-art Prison facility as well as various correctional centers

The Economy
1) Introduce a Government Guarantee loan on Small Businesses started by persons ages 16-24
2) Invest more of the Government’s budget into marketing The Bahamas on an International Market
3) Introduce a National Worker’s Pension Program (which can be accessed at the age of 60)
4) Introduce a National Marriage Incentive program to either 1) allow couples to collect a cheque from the Government for $2,000 (per person =$4,000 at the end of 7 years of marriage) and/or ($90 a month per child ages 7-18 for 7 years)
5) Legalize gambling with the intention that all proceeds be invested into Education
6) Establish an independent, non-bias, Committee of 20 on Marijuana Research (5 Doctors, 5 Scientist, 5 Environmentalist and 5 Pastors) to investigate the health and spiritual effects of the drug and if the report comes positive, legalize it and tax it by 67%)
7) Work towards the privatization of (non-necessity) Government owned companies

Education
1) Introduce a Government Grants Program (money you do NOT have to pay back) for students studying tertiary level Education at home and internationally
2) Introduce a Subsidies Program for teen mothers to make it easier for them to also pursue tertiary level education
3) Introduce a National COB tuition freeze at ($1,700=tuition + room and board) for Bahamian enrolled students
4) Liberate the school system and introduce a one that is designed actually EDUCATE students rather than EXPELL them. (In other words: No more looking after petty, simple things like students hair, make-up, nails etc. (they will be allowed) , but start focusing on their creativity, ability to learn and to experience and attain a full and complete comprehensive education-without have to worry about being sent home because “their not a 1960’s disciplined student”)

Energy and The Environment
1) Begin to move towards Solar power and other natural means of attaining energy
2) Reduce Gas Emissions internally

2) Establish Child Care and Protection Facilities

6) Implementing a “Toddlers New Beginning” program which will move towards making education and heath more accessible and better constructed for small and vulnerable families with children ages 1-6.
7) Introduce a Preventing Family Violence Campaign
8) Create a Community Development project

Brown Suga

Propose/enact legislation so that does the work flow or processes of the govt offices does not stop when governments change...in other words regardless of who the government is the country will still be getting on with the business of the day and not waiting for the new PM to "shuffle" the PS's etc.

Make the web shops pay a tax above and beyond the regular business licence that they now pay or should be paying.

Sell all the corporation that are a burden on the public's purse. Governments are not put in place to run businesses.

Scottbahamas

I would approve the next cancun.
Right now we have the 5 casinos and 5 hotels trying to go into east end grand bahama where there is shiiiiit. proposal been bouncing around since nov 2006 and all major investors met with pm in oct 2007 , now project is waiting on nec.
i dont know why we treat investors like crap
harcourt who is saviour now had to wait 13 motnhs for approval in 2000 for tommy t and the boys who were to busy being trying to be leader to sit in a nec meeting to approve.
this is bull****
they need to put prioirity. this project will be real billions for gb and hire 4-5000 people.
thats what i would do if i was pm just one day.

Lovely

I'll get in on this.

1. Crime. Solve the Privy Council issue so that everyone who has been given the death penalty can stop taking up space; insure the rehabilitation is taking place, and criminals are not simply being housed; clear cut sentencing for offenses with exponential increases for repeat offenders (judges don't seem to have enough "discretion" for the amount they are expected to use). Prisoners also need to earn their keep. I would have them cleaning the streets on a regular basis. It also important to get rid of the backlog by hiring and/or bringing in magistrates and setting up temporary courts. Get those old cases dealt with so that justice can FINALLY be SWIFT.

2. Education. More classes should be be mandatory. From grade 7 to grade 12, students should be taking one foreign language, one science, and one business course. The should be a separate course for writing, separate and apart from English Language; this course would include essay, research report, memo, letter, resume, cover letter, and creative writing. Increase teachers' salaries, but make them reflect qualifications and experience. Every school should have one period per week for "Guidance", let by the guidance counsellor and invited guests. In this session, students would have conflict resolution training, group discussions, guest speakers on various different topics, etc. Develop after-school programs to run from 3pm to 5pm. This can be done in a partnership with local churches and businesses.

3. Traffic. Develop a public bus system. ONE bus system. Proper routes and bus stops with ALL drivers under ONE company. A proper bus schedule should be available online and in print. A limit should be placed on the number of SUVs entering the country. Two adults and one child does not warrant the need for a Ford Expedition. Increase the legal age to drive.

4. Go green. Reduce the use of paper. Use more efficient, environmentally friendly ways of keeping files and records. This will also create more space in government offices. Reduce the use of plastic. Give private businesses the incentive to be more environmentally friendly. The country could be doing a lot more. For example, grocery stores can order and sell reusable grocery bags to reduce the use of those plastic bags that have to be double just for a carton of eggs. Implement a recycling program. There is no reason for The Bahamas to not be a stage where everyone recycles paper and bottles.

5. Apathy of the people. Make it mandatory for MPs to hold regular meetings in constituency offices. This would be a time to meet with constituents, and share thoughts/concerns/comments. Allow the people to become more involved in the developments of the country, influencing their own governance as well as the future of the country. People can be appointed/voted into certain offices (e.g. secretary), and every meeting should result in 3-5 main points to be discussed in the HOA.

6. National lottery. REGULATE and legalize gambling.

7. Downtown, Nassau. CLEAN IT UP! Relocate the straw market. Relocate the main hub for buses.

8. Gov't Offices. Run them more efficiently. Put rules and regulations in place to ensure that people are at work when they should be, doing what they should be doing. Swipe in, swipe out. No phone to ring more than 3 times. Customer service training for those on the front line. No more, "I ain' know..." or "You mussy gotta go to...".
