nationbuilder 03-15-08, - 11:54 AM It never ceases to amaze me how blatantly segments of America play their hand when it comes to race..
Obama's pastor makes comments about the activities of the United States in countries throughout the world (statements that are actually true), and he is dubbed "unamerican" and the press is on a crusade to insist that since this black pastor says these things, his black congregant must surely feel the same way.
On the flip side, John McCain has John Hagee and Rod Parsley on the campaign trail with him at different times. Parsley is considered a homosexual-hater and Hagee a "zionist" and racist. It was Hagee who said God destroyed New Orleans cuz the people there were so evil. Funny he didnt say the same about the predominantly white areas of Mississippi which suffered more damage than did the lower ninth ward. He also didnt say this about New York City after 9/11 or Florida after Hurricane Andrew.
The media also had a problem with Obama's pastor endorsing him from the pulpit. But has anyone ever watched John Hagee? His is a card carrying preacher/politician. Every Sunday his is bigging up Bush and the Republican party and tearing down the democrats. He has now endorsed McCain. He constantly refers to Bill Clinton from the pulpit as "slick willy."
But while McCain has these men with him on the trail, the media isnt trying to insist that he feels the same way these men do. He hasnt rejected comments made by Parsley yet.
How come its unamerican to say that policies the U.S has adopted overseas have caused problems for the country (which they have), but its not unamerican to hate homosexuals and make (as Hagee often does) consistently disparaging comments against blacks?
While comments made by all three of the preachers are offensive, the response to them is instrcutive indeed.
And in all cases where people have said offensive things in his campaign so far, Obama has removed them from his campaign. But in the case of Clinton and Ferraro, she refused to remove the woman from her campaign.
sapadilly 03-15-08, - 12:15 PM That is why themes of racism persists in America. As much as others here disagree, it is not African-Americans who "play the race card" per say. They are usually portrayed as such when voicing their perspective of their own country.
If a Black person (Michele Obama) says, "recently i have reason to be proud of America," she is labeled anti-American and a racialist. It is as if, African-Americans dont have reason to feel disappointed in the country the y helped to build. It is not that you are draggin up ole stories, it is a simple fact that that segment of the population's history in that country has been severe.
God-forbid an American voice their opinion, it is at that point that their difference in race is brought to the foreground. It is like look, the black man doesnt love America.
Last I checked free speech was still apart of the constitution.

The reality is that everyone isnt equally american in the eyes of all americans. Depending on where you are from or what color you are, you rank on the scale of "authentically american", and with this rank comes the unspoken right or privilege to speak on whats happening in your country from your point of view.
The United States was built on the backs of different ethnic groups made into slaves, whether it was indentured slaves from Europe or African slaves. Yet, when African Americans talk about their country in ways that dont fit the ideal of "real americans", its a problem.
Take the democratic party and its dvision of pledged delegates in states, for instance. While latinos vote in higher numbers than blacks in Texas primaries, and make up a larger number of the voting block than blacks, the democratic party allots that group the smallest division of delegates. Why? We know how America feels about latinos..so its no wonder their importance would be diminished some. This is why though Hillary won the latino vote, she came out of Texas winning less delegates than Obama did.

Exactly! So when ppl say that Obama's color should not be an issue, that is exactly why it is an issue. For first time in a long time, the disenfranchised American feels like their voice is being reflected in the electoral process.

I always thought it was ridiculous when people tried to act like race in this campaign doesnt matter..how could it not? It matters in so many other aspects of society and life..how will it suddenly not matter in something of this magnitude?
Obama's father is Kenyan and he spent time in a different culture - so that makes him a muslim and someone to be afraid of. So if your father is German, does that make you an anti-semite? If your father is Russian, does that make you a covert operative?
The reality is that the press was steady suffocating itself trying to act mature and enlightened by not focusing on race. They are so happy Ferraro said what she did. Now they can all exhale and get down on it with the race issues like they always wanted to.

Right again! Its not like blacks are reducing Obama to a singular racial status, those are the ways of the land. When he was running for Illinois senate he was a BLACK man, and now he is seen as such. The point is that a minority; a person who does not fit the definition of "true American" has gotten further than any other minority group (women included).
foxhillgal 03-15-08, - 01:00 PM I was bored yesterday, and for some reason whilst driving I flipped my radio to AM and came across WINZ I think, there was a talk show and the host was whining on about this Pastor, I did not catch the voice at first, but John Kerry was her guest, and the part I caught was Kerry stating that the Pastor was about to retire, (I did say I caught the ending) any way a man called in, he sounded African/American and tried to explain that this Pastor is in his 70's and he was just relating HIS experiances and what HE the Pastor went through.
The Host a woman just started whining that it was true, but he should not say those things in a Church, well blow me down. These people just irritate the bejeebus outta me. I wont even bother to say what I have heard in "church" by white Pastors.
I am not for or against Obama, but give me a flippen break. The media is going to play this for all its not worth, ugh keep your vomit bags handy. :taped2::sparky::realmad:

U capture it sistren!!! Obama's gat the HEART of the masses... of course, inclusive of the blacks....
Typical predjudice WHITE Americans have MAJOR issues with this ... more than blacks are among the 'disenfranchised'..... to quote Barrack "the world is watching" (((powerpack werds!)))):hammer:

Reality is that the establishment believes "minorities" owe "real americans" something, so they shouldnt dare speak against the country that has allowed them to get so much.
When the Pastor spoke about America infecting black men with syphillis in the Tuskegee experiment, was he not speaking truth? Hasnt America tested dangerous products on its own men in the military? The pastor was a marine..he's seen what none of us have and certainly what none of these pundits have.
Alien 03-15-08, - 01:11 PM Race matters when people make it a matter and feed into it. Of course we can see Obama is black....people voted for him anyways. Of course his pastor is fiery...every black pastor in the Bahamas is fiery. So to with America. Pat Robertson and John Hagee are racist and anti-semetic in their fire and brimestone sermons...Falwell was the worst one and he was, for years, the spokesperson for the white American conservative movement.
I think we have to step aside and think about how the "media" has played a huge part in exacerbating the racial tensions. MSNBC and Fox News, have made a mockery of this campaign- including Billary surrogates. Who are most to blame.
It won't work...there is simply too much information and access to information, for regular voters, young and old, to be duped by the tunnel vision scope being fed to you by the major news networks. Because, the youth vote this time, as well as fed up middle aged Americans, who have REALLY seen their country detetiorate right in front of their eyes, know that there is at least three separate America's- perhaps even more. There is White America, Black America and Native American America (who comprise Latino's and Native Americans; to some extent with the latter). The lack of due care an attention by the large power holding majority, the whites, have now been understanding that a part of their problem, especially with their image world wide, has allot to do with what black pastors have had the nerve to say and been saying, FOR YEARS - you don't take care of your own people and this is why people hate you. We have to fight to be equal to you and you take that arrogance abroad. You have put your foot on the neck of Latino South Americans- in their country and here. The American dream, appears to be a sham.
Americans have seen this with the Iraq war and American folly into Bush-foreign policy....they hate what the world has to say about them. Even what the Brits, their strongest allies, have to say about them. Its not nice. Truly. The access to mass media, internet and telecommunications, amplifies this mass sentiment...no longer can major news networks, hide the facts of WHY EXACTLY, you are hated and disliked in the world. Something black Americans have been telling their white power structure, FOR YEARS.
The tide is shifting however, as Americans- black, white and hispanic- are REALLY hurting, and quite frankly, in need of a friend other than the old white folks (who feed them the same old fodder)...my American buds, white, black, old and young, are simply shocked and horrified at how people REALLY feel about them. They are looking to make a change and a cognizant social change, for their own image and peace of mind. Go with your fellow American....even if he's black. Obama, has much to lose in America as his counterparts. He's American too...and people see that.
This is a part of the political shift race baiters in America simply cannot grasp- especially the main stream media, who are so innundated with facts and lies, that it seems impossible for them to form a coherent argument and point of attack for the side they support. We know Rush and Sean are racist bigots. We know the folks over at MSNBC are little white Billary lovers. We know this is a Billary attack on both Obama and McCain (playing them for pandering to religious nutters on both ends)...as Americans did not care who whacked wee Willy's, willie...they don't care who your pastor is, was or going to be. Just help build this country... restore faith in the American dream.
Their style of politricks is old hack. This is what Obama stands against and is why people are voting for him. Only until he wins, his supporters will stop being so edgy on his blackness!
He will beat Billary....the Billary campaign is in the last throes. This recent attack, using Republican surrogates, won't work.....it's too late. Since Billary "won" Ohio and Texas, she is BEHIND, yes, BEHIND in delegate count and lost even more delegates -7. Go figure!
