This is a picture of the only visible damage from the South side of Rose Island...the rest of the coastline is so far undamaged.

But here is what the inside of the future Ritz Carlton site looks like.

Here you can see where the water is being pumped out. There used to be a wetland where the site is now.

Here is one of the many pumps.

For those that know Rose Island.......that area used to be a thriving wetland (I remember camping and fishing there as a kid).

Does anyone have pictures of what it used to look like by any chance?

Also, I've heard a rumour that the developers do not have the proper permits required to drain and fill that area, does anyone know if that's true or not?

I've also heard there have been some problems with getting approval from the BEST commission and that there are still some issues of concern that seem to be ignored by both the PLP and FNM, does anyone know if this is true or just a rumour?

Here is an article from Nassau Guardian from 2006 when deal was signed with Ritz and government:
http://archive.nassauguardian.net/archive_detail.php?archiveFile=./pubfiles/nas/archive/2006/February/14/Business/248094.xml&start=0&numPer=20&keyword=Rose+Island&sectionSearch=&begindate=1%2F1%2F2002&enddate=3%2F16%2F2008&authorSearch=&IncludeStories=1&pubsection=&page=&IncludePages=1&IncludeImages=1&mode=allwords&archive_pubname=Nassau+Guardian%0A%09%09%09

Check this part out:
"In fact what is unfolding is a change in how developers view their projects. Gone are the days when developers came in bulldozed the land and then imported the plants they need. On Rose Island Mr. Boulet explained that the only trees removed will be those covering the foundation and a 10-foot perimeter to "provide space for the builders". "We will remove the trees that would cover a 3,000 square foot area and place them in the natural reserve."

He explained in his presentation during the press conference that "we do not have to buy any trees because of what is already there. Why would you want to destroy what is there and spend money to import new trees?" he asked rhetorically.

The developers are realising that with their multi-purpose model and the growing awareness of environmental stewardship that it is possible for the well-heeled to enjoy both their creature comforts and the peculiar natural resources of their chosen communities.

Ritz Carlton Senior Vice President Ezzat Coutry summed it up best when he said "All of us here today share a commitment to developing a resort and residential community which will respect and protect the natural beauty of the environment."

Looks like the developers are draining and filling in that entire inner wetland area.

Here is a letter by LYNN P HOLOWESKO who at one point in time was in charge of the BEST commission (letter from 2006)
Shock at Rose Island Approval:
http://www.bahamasb2b.com/news/wmview.php?ArtID=7120

"This area, Mr. Christie well knows, was identified to be set aside as a recreational park for Bahamians following a request to the Bahamas National Trust in 1988 by Mr. Christie himself, the then-Minister of Agriculture, for a list of areas the Bahamas Government ought to consider adding to the National Park system!
In 2002 Mr. Christie proclaimed that the Bahamian people needed a government that would be real guardians and protectors of the environment, and pledged to lead a government that would be exactly that.
Four years later: The Nassau Guardian, Thursday, February 16, 2006 - "PM welcomes the Ritz".
The Prime Minister also called on Bahamians to appreciate their role in being the "guardians and protectors" of investments, such as the RitzCarlton..." Guardians and protectors of investments? Say what?"
.................................................
Well done Mr. Cool PC......................

But, what will the current FNM government do about this situation?
What did the FNM discover about the Rose Island deal when the halted all those deals and looked into them a couple months ago?
What does Loretta Butler Turner the MP for Montagu Constituency (which Rose Island is a part of), and MP of the environment Hubert Minnis say about the Rose Island Ritz Carlton deal?
