I am also a proud graduate of COB and I had a pretty frank discussion with a prof. while I was there. In here defense of the horrible curriculum at COB she blamed the fact that they are working with an 'O Level' system that is supposed to prepare students for higher education, but it really doesn't. One of the first steps to ensuring students get a sound education at COB, would be to ensure that they have the requirements in high school to handle the work load in college.
The system at COB is a liberal arts system, this means an individual takes classes in a wide variety of areas and is hopefully more well rounded after the process. This system has been pioneered in the US, and is the system that most school there follow. It is sad to say that COB appears to have adopted very little if any assistance from these US schools in terms of content and curriculum. I hope that they rethink and overhaul the curriculum before they even consider changing the name to a University.
This may be a bit petty to ask but if it true that COB is making physical education mandatory? I heard this during the term and a girl who went to the orientation told me that this is indeed so. Just wondering.

I am current student of the Freeport Campus and so my comments and observations may not be as broad. There are primarily administration problems with COB as most of you would agree but our problem and I reiterate our problem is as a result of a two fold deficit. One in the system of education and the other in the civil service. I hav e noticed that many of the students that come to COB want to be in Education because they believe that the course is simpler and easier. They come lacking English and Math skills, not to mention the fact that they are ahrdly ever well-rounded. Logical deduction and inference is limited. This clearly reflects on the system that they came from. That two can be broken into parental responsibility and thew educational system's responsibility.
I have had a long history with COB as I am a part time student. The history is long because of administration deficiencies. We are now under new directors and reevaluation is in order so that at the present much cannot be said.
I do implore all Bahamians to as much as possible support the institiution because at some point we need to have it perform the services that it was designed for. As someone pointed out already students have as much a right to this process of good service and have as much responsibility as administration. As a part time student I have a difficulty in keeping current of all the happenings but I try as much as possible to be involved. I would like to be more of an activist but my time does not allow. Those who are full timers or part timers with "time" should insist with proof and facts and proper presentation the case of students so that at the end of the day we will indeed have a University of the Bahamas.

They will cause quite a sitr up if they do. As a matter of fact, if this is truly instituted I am inviting all the students who oppose this move to hold protests against such a fact. This is discrmination against those who are not bale to perform physically and against those who don't see P.E. as important for their future.
I would be the first to protest if they do. Its funny considering that one of the reasons why I rejoiced leaving high school was that it meant no more PE, cuz in CR Walker they worked you like slaves.
But I dont see it coming madatory because they would need to open sections and sections for it and that means they would need professors to teach the classes, and I dont know how many PE lecturers there are, but I doubt its enough for COB's population.
im sure they would loose alot of students if they did do that.
PS. also turn off the messenger system (not MSN) and all remote access services, firefox is great, but only half the protection.

this is whay i support the other private institutions who provide better service for the children!!
some people are under the impression that becasue c.o.b is the biggest, and that it is difficult to get into, because of the service they offer is ridiculous which gives the impression of it being strict ......
let me tell you a story...
picture it...miami 2004...a young peasant boy was away in miami doing his B.A degree, and wanted to do summer courses here at c.o.b....well guess when the response for my application for the summer was sent...
november 2004..and again in september 2004....yea twice!!!
well needless to say i didnt need c.o.b anymore..and neither did i call them to tell them feck off...cause at this point they can do what they want with it!!!
that young peasant boy was me!!!
and this isnt the first time c.o.b refused good money, or simply dropped the ball from students willing to pay to take classes.....
like i say, some people accept the stupidity and idiocy that the college has to offer cause they are blinded....their are alot of other colleges that can provide better care and education for bahamian students...and are acreditted!!!
spread the word...if c.o.b is messing you around...dont waste your time or your loved ones time!!!
i say bring em to their knees...its the only way they can get better, and that is by stiffer competition!!!

Seconded. I attended the summer art workshop many times at COB, and was chastised a myriad of times for sitting down on the steps of the lobby in protest of there not being adequate seating in said place.
Name one college other than COB that denies it's employers the right to sit down on it's steps?
I fail miserably to see how my sitting on the steps of the lobby hinders the purpose or functions of the college.
I once approached, then President, KB about benches for the lobby and was met with the deepest of answers, "No."
All I could do was shake my head.
I'm sure COB has a course on carpentry, and I'm sure there are students who'd be willing to make the benches.
Granted that she is no longer the president, I believe that KB needs to understand that even if you happen to be the widow of a Bahamian celebrity/visionary; it does not automatically make you one.
There is more to life than just "looking like you working at your job."
I'm of the mind that she sets a piss-poor example when it comes to presiding over potential visionary Bahamians.
Further, for an individual who presided over the nation's tertiary learning institution, she seems to have gotten her manners and tact from a water pump and a roadcone of said orange respectively.
Almost a crying shame.
I went to COB for about 2 years doing the BBA in CIS and I must say, the hell they put me through did prepare me for "the real world". In fact, all the hell I went through in the Bahamas in general prepares you for almost anything. I will say though, the College of Business at COB is pretty good for the first 2 years or so if you're intending to go off to school. I always heard stories about credits not transferring and blah blah blah.. Well thats partly COB's fault and mostly the schools here(US) not wanting to accept credits for stupid technical reasons. When I transferred here the school i'm at took about 48 of my 51 credits from COB. Now where they applied them was a different story but needless to say I had to repeat a few choice courses like MGT 101 because they wouldnt apply a 1000 level course to a 3000 level course(MGNT 3600 here). Same goes for COM 211, they felt the materieal was sufficient BUT there were no oral components so they wouldnt apply it, give me a break. I loved COB's +/- system, that helped ALOT while I was there and it was actually fair but here theres no +/-.. Other states use it but not here, theres no reward for getting a 78 or an 88% in a class. So of course when I transferred here all my B+'s got stripped down to B's and my C+'s to C's. My C- and A- on the other hand got upped to a C and A respectively and I was happy cuz I had no intentions of repeating em. But I am happy they accepted so much, I graduate in July after 2.5 years.
However, I was definitely NOT prepared for the Math I had to do here.. COB and that Math 140 crap is a JOKE. More than likely if you transfer out you will have to go up to precalc levels and I had no idea about the most of that stuff being taught, I stink at math too btw so that didnt help either. But for the most part, COB business classes fit in line with most of the classes here which was why I chose here anyway. When I looked at the curriculum and then compared it to COB's it looked almost like a copy. I would say if youre planning on transferring dont do anymore than 2 years because anything beyond that schools are going to be hesitant to accept because they want you to do most of your major stuff with them and they arent willing to accept major courses from all over the place. I had fun at COB, had my share of good and bad teachers but it was an experience. Oh yeah, and that freshman 15 thing is NO JOKE, its real, especially considering wendys/mcdonalds/kfc/quizznos/the reef/the shoal/bamboo shack are a hop, skip and a jump away. :D
Oh yeah, DO NOT spend 4 years at the College of the Bahamas for an I.T. degree if youre actually seriously interested in the field. They are seriously lacking in that regard, but are safe for majors like Finance, Accounting, Banking, Management, Education, stuff like that. If you have no choice its fine though.

Shane Gibson is a "Star" though..we need more non-partisan national and local leaders like him. he gets it and is trying to do the right thing. Fred Mitchel on the other hand is avery dangerous man. Just read some of the stuff he talks about on his website. can anyone belivethat his ministry issued a press release this morning concerning the firing of the Registrar General? Firstly, she was a contract worker so on its face she wasnot a cicvil servant. Additionally, the release made reference to the PLP as notbeingdown with victimisation. Obviously Mr. Mithchel who is responsible for the public service believe that the Government and theparty are one. i once had high regard for Mr. Mitchel from his PDF days, but he is showing his true colors now. No worries though, he will be deposed in a couple of years and his political career will be over.

Hmmm...on the real though! And it een just the college though, it's an entire clique!
You should hear about the time the High School I graduate from deliberately messed up my sister's report card and scholastic record.
The failed her in all her classes, tell her she was stupid, remidial...all kinda tings - THEN get wex and try take my dad to court when he pulled her out of school to home-school her.
The sentiment was more or less:A Seventh-Day Adventist, black man from Kemp's Bay, Andros say he home-schooling his daughter! Who to hell he think he is?!
My sister was able to get a scholarship into St. Andrews based on her home-school academics. The "St. Andrews Wannabe" school that mess up my sister record (and I graduated from that school, so when I say they wannabe's...REALLY) raised holy hell that their entire roster of diverse teachers assigned to my sister were out-performed by two teachers.
They'd continually bring up allegations of truancy, lived with having the police at our door every other day.
We had to appear in front of The then Director of Education...she asked us for an outline of the syllabus my sister went by. All she did was look at it slack-jawed, and pocketed the syllabus the same way someone who steals silverware at a wedding does.
Hmmm. But you know what they say..."When teef teef from teef...God smile." I betcha God grinnin at them right nah.
