2008 is the International Year of the Reef:

...."The overall objectives of IYOR 2008 are:
· To strengthen awareness about ecological, economic, social and cultural value of coral r eefs and associated ecosystems.
· To improve understanding of the critical threats to reefs and generate both practical and innovative solutions to reduce these threats.
· To generate urgent action to develop and implement effective management strategies for conservation and sustainable use of these ecosystems."

..."The Focal Point for The Bahamas is Mr. Andre Cartwright of the Ministry of Tourism’s Sustainable Development Department. Anyone who is planning, or would like to plan a reef awareness activity is asked to contact Mr. Cartwright so that he can offer assistance where possible, and also so the project can be posted on the international site.

Yes bleaching still happens.....
Personally, I think the fines and penalities need to be increased dramatically and/or more importantly they need to be enforced.

penalties???? hah :). shoot the offboards off of their boats, and make 'em paddle to shore.
