What is an HBCU, and whats wrong withe Canadian Schools? :dgi:

I guess nothing, I just find it strange that people who live in 80 degree weather year round would want to trade it for cold weather and to be so far displaced from anything. Not knocking Canada, I would go there to work on my Ph. D if I got a free ride! But it sounds so boring (for lack of better words)

An HBCU is a historically black college, I am shocked that you dont know what one is. It is the best college experience! ( Im partial, I attended one). You get a GREAT experience and your surrrounded by leaders, forward thinkers, movers and shakers of tommorrow.

Are you in Canada already? If not, its not too late to change your mind ;)

Thankyou for the information, I will consider it when I am looking somewhere to do my post grad. But truthfully I would prefer a very culturally diverse school, not just all black faces, or all white faces. I liek to interact with people from different ethnicities and backgrounds.

Not to sound so persuasive, but what about trying a school that is more centrally located, and not so far away. That was my point, or suggestion. How did you hear about your school? Did you visit already? I visited my school and felt like this was the place for me and I recommend everyone to do the same, visit the school your interested in to see if you really can stand the next four years of your life (or two years if your transferring in). I hear to many stories of miserable people who hate their school and experience there to because they didnt visit or based it on too many this or too many that. On any campus, Im thinking US or Canada, there really wont be alot of cultural interaction going on, people tend to stick together with their races, sad but true. There will always be "more them, than you." There were other cultures at my school, its only 85% black and their was a big state school in the same city that had 40,000 students (3% of which were black or maybe even less than that) But what was so funny was that they always wanted to interact with us at our school, when they thought the same as you. My understanding of it is, what you try to run from you run to. My experience prepared me for life and interacting with other cultures all the while getting a sound education in hopes of matriculating into an ivy league school if I opted for post grad work. I am always selling my school to people, and I'll probably do it till the day I die...

I think alot of people miss the point of why Bahamians go to school in Canada.. Its CHEEP.. HBCU's are typically private institutions and would probably be more costly than most Canadian schools. And the cost of living in Canada can be ridiculously cheap for students so theres another factor. And its less of a hassle these days to get a Canadian visa than a U.S. student visa.

I was also against the idea of attending an HBCU cuz thats not my bag. A friend suggested it to me but of course the last few words that came out of his mouth after the suggestion was 'I hate white people' so theres his reasoning for attending one. I'd much rather just attend a state institution with a good proportion of asian/black/hispanic/white students in a diverse city. But if all else fails, run to Canada!
