View Full Version : Bishop Greene and Gambling?
pharoah 02-22-03, - 11:51 AM In a December 10th article in the Nassau guardian entitled: Bishop GREENE condemns gambling. He made some very interesting statements in an interview with news director of Cayman 27 DONNA BUSH. BISHOP GREENE is quoted as saying “there are some of us on the council who depending on the nature of the gambling support the activity.”
The article went on to say that bishop Greene pointed out that “the catholic church during its bazaar stages raffle, bingo and other such gaming events. “The same is done Anglicans church events, but what we are particularly concern about is gambling where the country itself gets involved in it as a way of life.” I was indeed surprise to hear or read about these statements coming from bishop Greene who happens to be the president of the Christian council.
What these statements reveal is that the Christian council is itself divided on the issue of gambling. The council is a divided house. The moral conscience of our nation is divided on a matter of conscience! How can bishop Greene who is quoted on many occasions as being oppose to “all forms of gambling” even attempts to justify his comrades in the council. Gambling according to bishop is wrong no matter how you cut it, so therefore his comrades who practice “any form” should be condemn.
Bishop Greene in the latter part of the above statement attempts to justify his comrades by saying that the right or wrong of gambling now depends on who is practicing it and how much time we gamble! I don’t want to read the good bishop wrong if I did I apologize. But if words have any meaning it does appear that the bishop is flirting with hypocrisy.
The slick rhetoric that the bishop is using reminds me of a few well-known politicians and lawyers. I think the bishop have been hanging around the above too much lately, he’s beginning to sound like them.
What this interview has brought to the fore is the need for the Christian council to make a definitive statement on gambling. The Bahamian people need to know exactly what each council member views are on the gambling issue.
I call upon the leaders of the Anglican and Roman Catholic organization to clearly define their views on gambling especially after bishop Greene highlighted these churches in his interview.
I believe the Christian council should speak with one voice or remain silent on the issue of gambling.BISHOP GREENE AND GAMBLING.
o3parietal 08-31-03, - 10:43 PM This is why I find The Council [which I refuse to attribute the title "Christian" to] humourous. Like watching an old episode of In Living Colour.
Just some background information:
Scholars disagree on who started the ancient tradition of lotteries, but there are references in the Bible. In Chapter 26 in the Book of Numbers, Moses used a lottery to award land west of the River Jordan.
1465: Lotteries were held in Belgium to build chapels, almshouses, canals and port facilities.
1612: King James I of England, by royal decree, created a lottery in London. The proceeds were used to aid the first British colony in America - Jamestown, Virginia. Interestingly, Anglican churches held two of three winning tickets for the first draw.
1790 to 1860: Twenty-four of the 33 states financed civic improvements such as courthouses, jails, hospitals, orphanages, and libraries through lotteries.
1856: The Act Concerning Lotteries expressly forbade all types of lotteries in Canada. This Act especially affected the French and Catholic clergy, who for close to a century had financed its "good works" with lottery proceeds.
And if it were made known the esoteric concepts behind "Stick and Ball Games" [Which some denominations have been known to keep secret] I'm guessing the 'Church' would stand against it too.
bishop greene should be deported or jailed for treason, and the christian council demolished, as its just one pathetic excuse of an organisation that is holding this country back.
Truthseeker 09-02-03, - 10:41 AM I don't think we should be listening to the christian council for moral guidance in the first place. These men are no better at running their own personal lives than you or me. Why would anyone give another person that type of control or power over them in the first place. Do we not possess the ability to think and make decisions for ourselves. The christian council and its president Samuel Greene are fighting a battle they will inevitably lose and they know it. I believe it was Bishop Drexel Gomez who opined the church's diminishing role and influence in bahamian society because of the inroads secular humanism has made. This acknowledgment spoken on the talk show 'Issues of the Day' is from the leader of one of the largest organized church in the Bahamas.
I don't know which country we could deport Bishop Greene to because he is, I believe, a bahamian citizen, and one has to wonder who would want him considering all the raucus he has been making of late. I don't think we ought to jail him either or abolish the council because that circus of clowns seems to be the only public entertainment to enjoy in the bahamas until christmas comes.

Well you are certainly brave for saying it.
I'll say it again for them as well.
A christian council is better than no christian council!!!!
However, they do need to get there acts together.
How is it that they also seem to be of different faiths when
they all serve the same God?
(that is what the devil tossed into my ear as I was typing)
Either way, they need to stand on the same principles, not
be divided. Again I say, there are too many people in power,
usually wealthy, in high places. These are the ones that crept
in and changed the agendas and make us all look foolish in the
end.
The devil wants to stir up strife in any united group coming against him,
and will amplify anything that can cause an argument, which will lead to the groups breaking up. Us christians need to pray for the christian council and indeed the Bahamas as a whole.
I am not afraid. I will pray for them. Satan hates prayer and will try to destroy any group that unites against him.
Matthew 5
10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
1 Peter 3
11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good?

Sorry don't agree with this. Just because they call them selves Christian does not make them so. Just because other call them Christian does not make them so.
Just because they call them selves Christian Council does not make them so.
bsmbahamas 11-23-04, - 10:08 AM nobody is persecuting you vicky.
We only point out that according to the Holy Bible, which you don't beleive in, says in no uncertain terms that homosexuality is wrong, and that we don't support your views on the right to be married.
Live together sure, use the legal services provided sure, but marriage is not a right for homosexuals.
especially in a christian nation.
if you are proud to be the way you are fine, we don't have to be proud of who you are as well, but that does not mean we hate you or dislike you. We would all like to help you, but you have to make the first step.
