View Full Version : Wages in this town, ain't movin!
Alien 04-24-08, - 11:08 PM Hasn't moved in quite some time. The last time, the Govt tried to impose a national minimum wage, people got fired and were asked to work longer hours, to suit the employer's preference.
How can we increase wages? We have to give Bahamian people, or, find a way to give Bahamian people more purchasing power. That has to go with allot of things. But, as I am labled as a poster, who starts a topic with a pre-conceived notion and wanted response, I await for people to start with a few ideas!
How do we increase Bahamian's earning power?
canesfins 04-24-08, - 11:10 PM You increase earning power by becoming better educated and trained. With the national grade average of D how can you justify earning capacity? It all starts with education.

I guess it all starts with the will to truly provide better education. I feel it is repressive on purpose. The teachers and the administrators, have to know they are WAY below board, in regards to teaching methods and strategies!
I speak to teachers, and, they are frusttrated with the BJC's, and BGCSE's, knowing that they are going to fail at least 60% of those kids. Not because they want to or the kids are dumb. But, the structure puts it that they will have to fail many, because the exam allows for at least 60-80% of the kids, to sit the C level exams, when the highest grade, is a C.
That, and, low focus on mental math in the schools and read comprehension. Not problem solving or equation maths- but, mental math, is the key to providing sound confidence in young learners. Reading comprehension, is the key into all other subjects!
But, we can increase earning power right now. Encourage more small businesses and uphold intelectual property rights. Also, take that worthless corp., BAIC, and get them to do something useful for flippin once!
In addition, try and exit some of these civil servants out, into their own businesses, where they do work for the government, and, let government outsource some of these top heavy Ministries and Govt. corps!
But, with the mentality and approach, we are taking to whole sale privatization of BTC, don't look for more earning power, going to the masses any time soon. People can do the job and they need an opportunity, to at least try!
They are no better or worse than anyone else, who tried and failed. And, if we get people, who have intimate knowledge of some of these Govt. corps, providing services anyways, they may do a better job once given a little rope!

This is a MAJOR issues with the national examinations. How the HELL can people get upset about the national average being a D when many students are only given the opportunity to get a C?! It makes no sense. No one should be able to decide who can and cannot take all of the papers in a NATIONAL exam... ESPECIALLY one that is used to evaluate job applicants, regardless of college/university degrees/diplomas/certifications.

Been saying that for years Love. Serioulsy. But, the counter argument, is that folks say that kids, are functionally illiterate. But, are we measuring that by the standards of the BGCSE, or, are we measuring that with other foreign equivalency tests?
THAT, and, the fact that the BGCSE, does not and has not ever, truly taught to the exam, from the course work. With that, the BGCSE course work, takes away from the regular school curriculum- I think kids still have to focus on both.
All of this, and, a few other bits and pieces, is what Bethel SHOULD be focusing on. And, not, as much, focusing on economic statistics, and, HOA revelations, which simply we do not need him to portend.
I mean, we need serious education reform. And, Min Bethel, is acting like he just does not care. We should have had Laing there, and Bethel, as Atty Gen and appoint a real financier in the Senate, as the Min of State for Finance.
JMO!

Not a bad suggestion! I would actually prefer to see Laing as Minister of Education (not over Bethel, particularly, but rather than Minister of of State for Finance).
If students are functionally illiterate, what the H-E-double-hockey-sticks are they doing in the 12th grade?! That isn't a BGCSE problem. That is a curriculm / Ministry of Education problem. If they're all in the same grade, doing the same coursework, they should ALL be taking the SAME exam. Alien, why doesn't this make sense to those that can actually SOLVE this issue?!
As for the examinations not matching up with the coursework... I will never forget taking the Social Studies BJC. I hadn't seen half of those TOPICS in my life... Let alone the answers to the questions. I had no idea where most of the questions were coming from, and I went straight to my parents and told them, "I don't think Social Studies is going to be an A. I didn't know half of the things on the exam."

We cant we keep profits up unless we keep wages down...one man's wage increase is another man's price increase! lol

Hehehe...that's like me and all of my BGCSE's. They were a total wash. I didn't know what the bloody Hebron I was doing.
But, in any event, the course work and curriculum is a serious issue. I'm not saying that we should end social promotion. But, perhaps, social promotion should go with additional class work and attention? THAT, and, revising the bar so that it speaks to a better national perspective?
Spending money on education, does not mean we are spending it right. Education is supposed to be liberating. Liberal thinkers are supposed to fire up education and its engine. We can't have liberation, if we have canonical approaches to learning, stiffling the outreach process and silencing progressive thinking.
I mean, half of education and educating, is outreach and communication. We need to find the right medium for communication! That takes liberal thinking and persons, who know how to reach out- our teachers, are frustrated because, they are consumed with teaching assesments for promotions, rather than focusing on their classroom! They don't have the time, inclination or engergy, to reach out. And, why should they!?!?

Profits over productivity. The age old debate. Sacrificing productivity, for profit margins.
I lean more towards proper and sustained productivity, over securing profit margins. To be quite honest. It goes with the notion of what you went into business for. Did you go into it to a) just make money or b) provide a useful service?
Now, I won't say I would go into business, if it was not succesful and profits were down and projected to be down for quite some time. But, certainly, I would not sacrifice good and meaningful productivity, for the sake of profit margins and paying for new technology...that's just me though!
I say that, in the spirit of growing your brand. Gatta grow your brand. That takes people. People push the business. Unhappy people, don't push a happy and successful business- it is relative.
Ting-um 04-25-08, - 05:57 AM Increase the value of the Bahamian dollar versus other currencies. Which probably means the Bahamas and Bahamians becoming more productive as a nation and people.

How to increase production? What do we produce?

I think it starts with you the individual, you can not force education on some 1.
