View Full Version : Hit and Run Accidents Not An Arrestable Offense!?
Rizzo 01-26-05, - 03:46 PM I have never hear such foolishness in my life.
It has been stated by the RBPF that hit and run offenders are unpunishable by law, because it is not a crime!
The RBPF says hit and run accidents are not an arrestable offense.
"A hit and run accident victim was informed today by Staff Officer Stephen Adderley at Police Headquarters that hit and run accidents are not an 'arrestable offense'. Apparently that is true even if the accident results in the loss of life or damage to another's vehicle."
"Despite numerous calls and even a stop at Road Traffic the victim of the hit and run accident is unable to get the taxi driver's information from the police department."
Hit and run accidents, have already increased by 250 per cent in the past year. No wonder...there is no law for them! And they wonder why people take the law into their own hands...if that happened to me and I found out who it was...I might get myself into problems, I don't even have to go any further with that point.
From now on I know what to do when I cause an accident.....JUST DRIVE AWAY! :escape:
:screw:

I don't doubt you Risso, but that is unbelievable! As far as I have always been told, "Leaving the Scene of an Accident" is an offence. :driving:
Well I have posted numerous posts on this forum regarding our road traffiic ...everyone knows there is no traffic law enforcement in nassau, until they have one of those road blocks, kind of equivelent to a cook out as they must need the extra money for something or another! The mount of accidents, and hit and runs I have seen in the past 3 years right outside my appt on at 3am in the mornings on weekends, is amazing, the police hardly ever turn up, and the drivers drive off or get towed by another drunkin friend. Anyway, seen some stuff out here ...
Myself was hit by a driver with no drivers licence, no car licence, no car insurance, and the car was not his, and he was high as a kite. AND he kept driving, was chased down by the cops ... BUT, guess who got charged ..they say i drove in front of him ..see i was turning right, and he came around the bend doing 100mph ...toor my car in 2 and it spun about 6 times through trees and all ...seatbelt and being a right hand drive saved me ... whole left side was gone .. ANYWAY, as you see ..the road traffic laws here are the stupidist around, and or they just never bother to investigate the accidents properly ..
and do you really think they are ever going to bother looking up a drivers licence plate?
Rizzo 01-27-05, - 09:39 AM That's the same crap I'm talking about!!! If that had happened to me I must have gone crazy!!! That's why more Bahamians are building up road rage nowadays.....Bunch of foolishness!!!

If that had happened to me I would have sought an audience with the Commissioner of Police, as I have done with other matters where the police have failed to offer the service for which they are responsible. I have had to do that, three times. Each time the matter was resolved satisfactorily.
Alien 01-27-05, - 02:32 PM WELL I GUESS IF IT IS A HIT AND RUN......you have to get the people to arrest them..no??
if they are not there to be arrested..then you cant arrest them now can you!
:what: :shhh:
Rizzo 01-27-05, - 03:04 PM Read and understand yk2bad.....even when the people are found, they cannot be arrested. There is no charge that you can bring against them in the Bahamas. No "leaving the scene of an accident"....no "damage to personal property"....nothing.....that is what is wrong about the situation...

yea i understood...and it was my horrible attempt at being funny :board2: .....
i have heard of this before, and to me its even more funny than my stale joke!!
but i guess you have to prove a man was there no dont you?
if it was a hit and run, and he is a suspect, cant arrest him now can you...i mean it is nothing more than speculation!!
then there are other factors like...a person darting accross the street and what not...even though you shouldnt leave the scene of a crime...it gets sketchy!!! :friday:
murder on the other hand you can arrest some one as i fugure that sometimes evidence can be either overwhelming.
even in murder, people are held in question, but later are charged!
in this case..which i know little about btw...we just have to wait and see!
but i can understand the "weird situation" in a way..doesnt make it right by any means though!
its a whole heap of baloney if you ask me...and i have heard of the same here in the u.s.
:hot:
bsmbahamas 01-27-05, - 05:22 PM Thanks for the tip, and I apologise in advance if I hit any of you guys - and run, becasue I probably will. :) (joking)
This reminds me of the time me and my 2 friends were out late driving, coming home from shooting pool. Our light was on green and turned yellow as we went thru the light doing about 30. This idiot came speeding thru his red light and luckily only hit our back bumper.
Instead of stopping he sped up, we was about to reverse and chase him down and fix him up, unfortunately 2 police were filling up and saw the whole thing. They sped off and caught him 2 lights away!
Then they told us that we were driving without due caution even though he ran the red light doing about 50 and get this, told the driver to give him $100 and he would work everything out. We were broke anyway, and he basically let him go and said we were both in the wrong.
So my question is why apprehend him and then try to bribe us when we were clearly in the right?
lol.
perhaps there really is 'no justice, only just us' - as a rap song goes.
islandgyal 01-27-05, - 05:54 PM if you read the original "article" that started this frenzy, you'd see that it came straight from the opinion section of bahamasb2b.com, not reprinted from a legitimate journal. b2b offers a good news service, but you have to read between the lines and look for the trib or guardian byline to know that you're getting the straight scoop.
ask ANY police in town. of COURSE hit and run accidents are arrestable.

That is what I thought.

and they had a new article yesterday ..i wonder what kind of damage they actually received from this, as they never posted an image of the car that was damaged ...? At least give us something to look at :-) If its just a scrape, then come on, i get hit at least once a week by some moron or another that cant drive .. normally a truck will do some damage but cars never even leave a scratch... it benefits one to have iron bumbers in Nassau, and some rock crawling protection :-)
