I agree. It really is the poachers in my opinion, more than the locals who may catch juvenile conch. Nuke the Dominican poachers. Change the laws enforcing a greater sentence on them if found guilty. I even say go as far to launch investigations into the extent of the orginization of the poachers, as we and the US does with drugs. Sunnyjohn 05-08-08, - 06:54 PM I agree. I am only in my 30's but can remember when the conch was bigger than your hand SKINNED. Now they are so smal its scary. We have done some really damage to our ecosystem. We have a poacher problem. THE RBPF needs to be beefed up and a seperate arms dedicated to patrolling the southern waters for poachers needs to be started- THE BAHAMAS COAST and FISHERIES GUARD. 25 working boats on a rotating partol with a dragnet around the area might put the squeeze on. Hell even the Bahamian fishermen can tell you exactly where to go to catch the poachers. Press them into service as spotters! The foreign boats know are waters are easy pickings. creature 05-08-08, - 08:44 PM Hell even teh Bahamian fishermen can tell you exactly where to go to cathc the poachers. Press them into service as spotters! The foreign boats know are waters are easy pickings. We have been doing that since the early 90`s and most of the time no response and when they do most of the time the boats are done full and gone! With no disrespect to the men and women of the RBDF, but it`s a joke, it remains under funded has it`s bien for 30 years and until the Government gets serious and properly funds it and I don`t mean buying a couple boats every few years I mean seriously fund it so that actual patrols can take place it will continue to be a joke. Already this weak a Dominican Boat has bien spotted in the waters very close to South Andros and has bien reported, haven`t heard of any arrest yet. canesfins 05-08-08, - 10:07 PM One of the major issues is not over catching, its the catching of juvenile conchs. I wish there was something we can do to pressure their government. I mean, we have an embargo on Haitian Mangoes, but Dominicans play "swiper" with our conch and we still like to go to their carnivals? chancellor 05-09-08, - 01:26 PM We DO need a conch season. Man you should see the commic in yesterday's Tribune. Sideburns say he will be the grown man crying if that happens. I would join him. I know it would be for the best....but...... |
