By BIANCA SYMONETTE, Guardian Staff Reporter, bianca@nasguard.com
A Grand Bahamian Immigration officer - charged with bribery and assault with a deadly instrument - is presently on $8,000 bail.
Mervin Dean, 50, of 14 Beachway Drive in Freeport was arraigned before Magistrate Debbye Ferguson on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to both charges.
It is alleged that on April 24, the officer solicited and accepted $1,200 from Benito Baptiste and Lionel Charles as an inducement to abstain from performing his duties as a law enforcement officer.
It is further alleged that on that same date, Dean assaulted Inspector Robert Lloyd with a 'deadly instrument,' namely a Black Chevy Envoy.
Dean pleaded not guilty to the charges and requested to have a summary trial, which Magistrate Ferguson set for October 30, 2008. Magistrate Ferguson also ordered Dean to stay away from persons connected to the matter, including Inspector Lloyd.
The prosecution did not object to bail. The magistrate granted the immigration officer $4,000 bail on the first count of bribery with two sureties. On the second count of assault with a deadly instrument, he was granted bail in the sum of $4,000 with three sureties.
The magistrate indicated that bail would not be accepted from the immigration officer's mother, wife or girlfriend.
Dean was represented by attorney Carlson Shurland.
*Alleged armed robber denied bail
An alleged armed robber is behind bars after Magistrate Carolita Bethel denied the 29-year-old Adelaide Village resident bail.
Courts records alleged that Edroy Smith on April 13, while with others and armed with a handgun, allegedly robbed Dan Adderley of $120 cash, a gold ring valued at $260, a gold chain valued at $600 and a men's watch valued at $70.
It is further alleged that on April 20, Smith, while armed with a handgun, allegedly robbed Luther Moss of $200 cash and a gold and silver presidential Rolex watch valued at $4,000.
Smith was not required to plead to the charges and was remanded until September 26 when his trial will begin.
In another matter, a 26-year-old man, charged with raping a teenage female, was granted bail on Thursday.
It is alleged that Alvardo Johnson of Ridgeland Park raped a 16-year-old female on April 4. His matter was adjourned until May 21 and will resume in court number 11, Nassau Street.
Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez granted Johnson $10,000 bail with two sureties.
