Pair charged with stealing electricity

Officials from the Bahamas Electrical Corporation said it is not a new trend but it may be the first for charges to be brought against someone for stealing electricity. On Friday, a single mother and a man were charged together in a magistrate court with stealing electricity from the Bahamas Electrical Corporation.

Shanique Sherman, 34 and Joseph Aime, 34, both of Eneas Jumper Corner, off East Street, were hauled before the courts and charged with this unusual offense.

Court records alleged that the two did dishonestly and fraudulently used electricity belonging to BEC at house number 11 on Eneas Jumper Corner.

The two pleaded not guilty to the charges on Friday and were granted bail in the sum of $500 each with one surety. Their matter will resume in court nine on October 16.

*Two Haitians remanded on manslaughter charge

Two Haitian nationals who were schedule to be arraigned from Wednesday were finally arraigned on Friday with manslaughter.

The arraignment was delayed because the court required the services of an interpreter.

The two men, Ticonpaix Blanc, 24, and Flerison Petit-Shal, 29, were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez on Friday. The interpreter read the charged to them. The court indicated that the men have no legal status in The Bahamas.

It is alleged that the men caused the death of an unidentified man in Exuma. They were not required to plead to the charge and were remanded to Her Majesty's Prison until their preliminary inquiry on May 27 in court 11, Nassau Street.

*Long Serving BEC employee charged with indecent assault

Fifty-year-old Garden Hills resident Michael Smith pleaded not guilty on Friday to a charge of indecent assault against a female, age 13.

It is alleged that the BEC employee of 30 years, between June 2007 and December 2007, did indecently assault the 13-year-old female. He was granted bail in the sum of $1,500 and his matter was adjourned until July 1.

*Man, 21, allegedly had sex with 5-year-old niece

A 21-year-old man who allegedly had sexual intercourse with his five-year-old niece was granted bail on Friday after being charged with incest.

Anthony Butler of Sunshine Park was not required to plead to the incest charge and was granted bail in the sum of $3,500. His matter was adjourned until May 22.
