EAST STREET BLUES-Back in Dodge City

I saw this article on the Nassau Guardian, it was written by Ian Strachan who "is a playwright, poet, novelist and filmmaker. He teaches English at The College of The Bahamas."

Interesting. And Nassau is just like the wild west: a load of violence, plenty of guns, gambling galore, and with the right connections and/or money laws can be bent or broken with out consequences. Only thing is we don't have any Indians (natives).

the things he spoke about canada is the reason students dont return.

i personally was too shame when he spoke about the way the canuks would wait in line for the bus but if they were bahamians they would be pushing and shoving each other.

this is one of the main reasons there are so many social problems in the bahamas.

its acceptable in the bahamas to be loud, crass, biggity. that type of behaviour is almost expected.

dont get me started on when he was describing how canuk men valued family in contrast to bahamian men.

its sooo sad i am literally near tears.

Nah, we already have Haitians here who we treat like crap, and Bahamians treat other Bahamians badly enough.

He used to write this column about a year or two ago and I guess when he went on study leave he took a break.

The articles are very good, u guys should do a search to find the archived ones.

Sooo true. However, people don't normally like that if faced against someone talking sense. I know how I feel when I see contrasting personalities like that. If they see an alternative, people go with the person who is sane and in control, always- especially if you can shut down a loud mouthed fool.

Bahamians just need to know what they are talking about. That's all. That would shut up many people....

Sadly this seems to be the case everywhere except the West Indies. I had occassion to work in Switzerland for a bit and the men there value family life....it is not odd to see them pushing strollers, taking their children to daycare or hanging in the park with them without the wife. Even in the US to a certain extent.

Actually when I see this in The Bahamas it warms my heart but this is few and far between!

The issue of delinquent, deadbeat, absentee fathers is something that is prevalant among the black populous as a whole, and not just here in the Bahamas or in the wider Caribbean. Its a disturbing trend that although not soley in the Black community, is highly prevalent compared to any other group. Traditionally Black men have failed in taking rein of their families and responsibilites.

brown if i cud live any where it would be switzerland and those other countries in that vacinity.

its actually better to live in those places versus the USA. its so calm and peaceful there.

yeah if u ever see a man in nassau pushin a stroller or have the baby on his chest in one of those chest thingies. that does look strange

bahamians might pass out if they ever see a daddy jogging with the baby in one of thos joggin stroller things

Sad to say but Nassau seems to be a very angry place. The family islands that I have visited the people seem to be very relaxed and extremely friendly. I don't know how or why we have lost our ability to treat one another with respect.

I think the younger Bahamian men [some] are playing more of a role in their children's lives!
