PLP paid for Bahamian in Turks and Caicos to vote, court heard

By KRYSTEL ROLLE, Guardian Staff Reporter, krystel@nasguard.com

The Progressive Liberal Party paid for Calvin Hart IV to return home from the Turks and Caicos Islands, one day before the 2007 general election, the Election Court heard yesterday.

However, Hart, whose vote is being challenged by Progressive Liberal Party Senator Pleasant Bridge-water, told the court that he did not return to Freeport specifically to vote. Rather, he said he just wanted to come home. Still, he added that he did vote in the general election.

Hart, a Grand Bahama native - who revealed that in the months leading up to the May 2 poll that he was "visiting" his mother in the Turks and Caicos - told the court he was contacted by a female who identified herself as a representative of the Marco City PLP team, wanting to know if he was interesting in returning home.

If you check the record, you would find out that both parties have done this over the years!! There is no surprise there!! The only surprise is the fact that the PLP is challenging someone that they flew in...I thought that they would have learned from Allyson's case.....

I also know that the former independent MP for South Andros flew many people into Mangrove Cay to vote in 2002 and 2007!!!

Why are you surprised about this known fact and where have you been living???

This is true, they bring students home to vote the time. However, doesn't one have to live in the constitency for six months to be eligible? I always wondered whether students have/had special priviliges, as the intent is to return home to make a contribution after schooling (supposedly).

I think that pleasant has already losted this case.. what is so bad about her petition is that she is protesting people who did not even voted.... I wonder if she is prepared to pay that huge legal bill... I think her bill will be higher then Allysion's bill...

"OJ" this is surprising not because she flew him home but for a couple of reasons. One is as you say that she is challenging someone that she in fact brought home, but also because she is the one who accused Laing of bring all these Turks people to vote in the election. Now we find out that she was in fact the one bringing people from Turks to vote. So what the hell is she complaining bout.
Only her and the PLP allowed to bring people from the Turks, I assuming that who ever they bring they at least think the people are Bahamians.

Doesn't it have to do with your permanent residence in the Bahamas? Like a student, you can be out of country for a few years...but, that does not mean that your permanent home in the Bahamas, makes you not eligible to vote.

The question should be, for me at least, is if whether or not this guy was working in the TCI and is a citizen of the Bahamas.

I would hate to have to think, that I, would leave this country, knowing I am a citizen and have to be forced to sit out an election, because of that- even though my homestead, has not changed ever.

But, maybe this is the controversy of it all!?!?!

When I was off to school, I got a free ticket to come home to vote...
I was grateful too, cause I needed a break and money was tight...
A few of my friends got free tickets too, from both sides...
I thought this was a regular thing to do. dang

I wonder if he voted FNM or PLP?WELL when I was in college during the election 1992, FMU, Miami... many FNM studets took tickets from the PLP to come home and vote.. the PLP had agents all ova the campus passing out tickets for students.. In this case it is obvious that the person took their ticket and came and voted against the PLP...
