View Full Version : Fair Student Wage
Lurker 05-07-08, - 01:26 PM Here we go again on the Student Wage issue. A Nassau-based business has hired a student for the summer. They are not sure what other businesses are paying summer students. They asked me. I don't know.
The duties of the student include getting yesterday's invoices from the service men, sorting the invoices, tallying the amounts, entering the numbers in an Excel spreadsheet, checking the stock against the sales, answering the phones as necessary and paging staff when problems arise.
What would a student working for the summer be paid according to the average conditions for such employment in Nassau?

That sounds like a full time job so this student should be paid accordingly.
sapadilly 05-07-08, - 01:31 PM Lurks, why would their status as a student matter? Are you talking High school or college student?
Sounds like sec/admin work to me and the going rate at home is like 125-220/week for that. Does the person expect to pay less because they are a student or because they lack experience. Either way anything below 125/week is not acceptable.

with increasing gas prices taken into consideration too.

Is the student in high school or college?
I think highschool students get $100/week and college $150-$200 - NIB is not deducted.
Lurker 05-07-08, - 01:37 PM The student is mature and either in last year of high school or first year college.
This is 40 hours per week for the whole summer.
It is more admin/bookkeeping than secretary.
Lurker 05-07-08, - 01:39 PM As to status of a student, it matters under the labour law that I know (Canada) where a fair student wage is defined by the government (but not enforced obviously).
This is just helping out the regular person who holds this job, and to provide summer jobs for students.
sapadilly 05-07-08, - 01:40 PM Well $100 sounds a little light to me, especially if they may be going onto College come September. I say they should start at $125 and your friend might consider a bonus at the end of the summer, if they they worked well, etc. We need to give kids incentives and unfrotunately, money rules the world.
das what I think.

Gal u read my mind if the student is doing all of that then they should be paid just what any other employee doing the same thing would be paid.. I would think there would only be a question if it were per say an internship then they would be paid in the applicable credit hours!!:jawdroop:

$150 - 175 would be fair. Tell them to call the labour bd or MOY to find out what is fair based on the market!
John Doe 05-07-08, - 01:52 PM I would say between $30.00 - $50.00 per day depending on the job itself and their skill level and like someone suggested earlier, some type of bonus at the end of the summer based on their evaluation.
Lurker 05-07-08, - 02:01 PM Thank you all for your comments.
When the student was asked what she thought a fair wage was, she replied that she was looking for $340-$360 a week. It seemed kind of high, so they decided to ask around. They had previous hired other students for $5.00 per hour or $200 a week.

Agreed.
$340 is definitely too much!

fantaZy 05-07-08, - 02:21 PM I agree no less than 150.00
i mean with 150.00 a week what about the NIB? i think it shoul be like $200.00 NIB will probaly take out one 6.00 so she will at least have $190.00 to work with and probaly save for college
