The recent shocking pictures of the melee in Nassau Village seen on ZNS television may have been mistaken for Iraq. The behavior of the crowd involved also must remind us of the not so long ago overthrowing of former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The rocks throwing in Nassau Village, the overturning and burning of police vehicles and the tires burning in the street, are new and not of Bahamian origin.

I certainly could appreciate the politicians and the religious leaders calling for calm and rightly so, but I cannot condone anyone who tries to take the law into their own hands.

With that as a backdrop I strongly suggest that a thorough investigation be done and everyone who has broken the law be arrested and brought to justice.

It is true that some may have concerns of how the whole matter was handled, but attacking the police is “INEXCUSABLE” to say the least. Any attempt by anyone to water down the behavior of the residents only adds fuel to a fire that has already been lit.

The police light handedness in the Kemp Road incident caused the people in Nassau Village to expect the same kind of repercussion. Had the police handle the Kemp Road incident differently then there might have a deterrent to repeating the same kind of behavior.

Bahamians everywhere must noticeably stand behind the police. If there is a delinquent police he must be dealt with, but law and order must not be compromised, especially for political means. We as Bahamians must band together to make sure that the police has all of our support.

Finally anyone who chooses to bury their head in the sand and ignore that we have a “boiling pot” as far as the potential Haiti uprising is concerns will soon have a rude awakening.

I agree with you fully Ivoine. Nevertheless, they weren't all Haitians that was involved in that riot. Unfortunately there is a criminal element in Nassau Village that was allowed to breed and grow and how it has come home to roost. I personally think it steams from the tolerance of corruption by politicians and the police. Consequently, THEY are responsible for the riot, and will be responsible for many more riots, if they continue to put their heads in the sand and ignore this latent criminal element.

yeah but the police (in general) always act like that, and have been for years, why just start protesting now ? Hey im not saying i condone their acts, just wondering ... Ive had both great, and horrible experiences with police over the years ... there are alot of them that are generally decent people ..the ones that act like you said make them all look bad ...

We've all been running on with this "crises" for the longest time.
WE HAVE AN IMMIGRATION PROBLEM. That's stating the obvious but lets all keep in mind that our immigration problem doesn't stem only from Haiti. Illegal immigrants in the Bahamas come from all social classes, races and levels of eduacation. Lets not blind ourselves to the fact that illegal immigrants come in many varied packages. Though that is true we also cannot blind ourselves that most of the illegal immigrants come from Haiti. They are estimated to make up a quarter of our population and since Haiti isnt changing for the better in our immediate future we should start addressing the issue from our side because no one will do it for us.
TAKE A LOOK AT US. From what I'm hearing in alot of these posts we need to change our attitudes about how we treat other human beings. Just because they come from a country that isn't doing so well doesn't mean we must burden ourselves with superiority complexes. Stop dehumanizing Haitians and making them sound like cattle. Recognizing and sympathizing with their situation doesnt take away from us or take away our resolve to protect our country and enforce our immigration laws. If we are going to have something to say, say it in a way that gets things done.
THERE ARE ALOT OF THINGS THAT NON-BAHAMIANS NEED TO UNDERSTAND. A previous post from an american stated that we shouldn't turn away Haitians because we're all black, another said that we as black people should stick together....we're all african descendants or something to that effect. Well here's a news flash, stop using racism to give us a guilt trip . We are a sovereign nation and we have every right to enforce our laws. Everyone has ancestors from somewhere else, and as time has passed we have legitimized our existence as Bahamians and as time progressed we chose how to govern ourselves by making laws and those laws should be respected by everyone who sets foot on our shores across the board.DO NOT CONFUSE THE RIGHT TO ENFORCE OUR LAWS WITH DISCRIMINATION. We dont claim to be a perfect country with perfect people ,and yes incidents of discrimination do occur but what country in the world is void of such things. It's no excuse, but everywhere U go with the good comes the bad. We are in a unique situation in the region, being one of the most stable and economically sound countries with a small population in the hemisphere sandwiched between two economically and politically problematic countries with large poplations numbering in the millions, and our dominating neigbour to the north (the U.S.). We have a limited number of jobs and a high cost of living. Illegal immigrants are a detriment to our economic and social stability. Their large populations migration to our shores even in the smallest percentage will very quickly outnumber our own and put a tremendous strain on our already burdened social services & they BLATANTLY take advantage of the benifits that were made to accomodate our small society. The wage gap they create by working for menial wages is detrimental to us all. The job market is already struggling with thousands of Bahamians left unemployed with serious Bills to pay while the illegal immigrant with very little overhead strains our education system with their children, takes advantage of our healthcare sector and makes our ministry of Labour and Immigration look like a joke (though its not necessarily their fault) and make it hard to get a job that pays a decent wage. U CANT COMPARE THE BAHAMAS TO THE U.S. We simply cant handle the number of illegals.
HAITIANS NEED TO UNDERSTAND SOMETHING AS WELL. THE BAHAMAS IS NOT A DOORMAT! YOU HAVE TO RESPECT OUR LAWS. LACK OF LAW AND ORDER IS ONE OF THE REASONS YOU LEFT HAITI SO DONT CREATE THE SAME SITUATIONS HERE! You have to respect our laws and if you are an illegal immigrant you start off on the wrong foot to begin with ( that applies to ALL illegals.) Dont make the place you are the place you left. Making an illegal situation into a legal one will never help the Bahamas, Haiti or any other nation for that matter.
I'VE STATED THE PROBLEMS AND SITUATIONS SO NOW I MUST OFFER A SOLUTION. Since the government wont act we need to be more proactive. The Bahamian government is a reactionary one so let Bahamians be the ones they react to, no one will do it for us. If we wait for the immigrants to provoke them into action we might as well stop the discussion. Dont wait for any 2007 elections to come and solve a problem, they have to start hearing us now so that by the time the elections get here if they have done nothing they will have no choice to address it or lose office and be held accountable for their blatant ignorance. Get on these MP's case. Start picketing and having peaceful protests outside their offices. Get some petitions started with like minded Bahamians. Start calling their offices and give them a piece of your mind (do it nicely though) belive me if U want Mr. Vincent Peet's number or that of his secretary dont hesitate to ask me for it. Make an appointment to speak with them either as an individual or group. If you know they have an appearance somewhere start showin up and protesting. if there is one thing we can learn from some of the illegal immigrants in our country's its their sense of entitlement. WE as the Bahamian public should feel entitled to a direct dialog with these people that are our supposed representatives.Look at the titles these people posess, what we let them have "Minister of Labour and Immigration"= our jobs and our borders. do U think that he is doing his job as effectively as he could? "Minister of Foreign Affairs and Public Service" has he stepped up to the plate as best he could? "Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of National security" do U feel secure with this woman in charge of National security? If not let them have it. Let Cuba and Haiti be an example of how leadership affects the path a country goes down and how important the voice of the people are.
Ask Mr. Peet to explain article 6 of the Bahamian constitution to U. dont be scared.
HERE'S HOW I THINK WE SHOULD APPROACH OUR IMMIGRATION PROBLEM. Setup a hotline where bahamians can report supsected illegals where it can be investigated and looked into a TIMELY AND EFFICIENT MANNER. Announce this hotline number on the radio, T.V public service announcemnts, the newspaper U name it. Have a MASS DEPORTATION OF ALL ILLEGALs, Canadians, Jamaicans, British whomever, all equal under the law no papers U leave .
With regards to Haiti set up a tight border along our southern edges andSetup a guest worker program.
We need to develop our agricultural sector to become more agriculturally independent to import less, and very few if any Bahamians want to work in agriculture so set up a guest worker program where Haitians work through the Bahamian Embassy in Haiti to get a guest worker pass to work in the Bahamas. As a guest worker in the Bahamas it is understood before U arrive here that :
1) this does not make U eligible for residency or citizenship and
2) any children that U bear as a guest worker will not be entitled for residency or citizenship as well.
3) If the project or task you are working on ends or dissolves, you go home
* With regards to pay your pay will be divided into three parts with the first two parts (a) & (b) negotiated on an individual basis.
a) a percentage will be kept here for your housing, food, healthcare etc,
b)the second part/percentage can be sent back to family members in Haiti
and
c) the third part will be funneled back into the Ministry of Labour and immigration to help with the repatriation of illegals, border patrol, air and sea craft etc.

This system can work however if we clean up house ourselves.
1)All corrupt officials and officers shall be fired immediately. We must
establish watchdog agencies to weed out corrupt members of our
government. If more watchdog agencies existed in sectors of our
government and public services can you imagine how streamlined and
efficient things in the Bahamas would run.
2) Install cameras in all of our detention centers. Rory pls help our
government out with their security systems (lol). If we make our
immigration department more transparent then everyone can be held
accountable for their actions, no one can point fingers, and Human rights
groups like can get off our backs.
3) Know that all children born of illegal parentage are given the citzenship of
their mothers country and if that country denies them that they are not
entitled to any kind of status from the bahamian government.
4) Bahamian Businesses that employ illegal should be SEVERELY fined.
5) We should be more vocal with the International communtiy to help Haiti (
they need to seriously stepup their efforts because what they're doing is
not enough). Get in contact with our Ambassador to the U.N Paulette
Bethel and ask her what sh'e doing about the situation.

If anyone has anything to add or critique about my comments PLEASE FEEL FREE TO DO SO, AND DONT BE AFRAID TO ACT ON ANY OF IT. IF U NEED TO GET IN CONTACT WITH THE MINISTERS DONT BE SCARED. IF U DONT WANT TO LOOK THEM UP, ASK ME FOR THE PHONE NUMBER OR P.O. BOX ADDRESS OR OFFICE LOCATION ,I would be more than happy to give it to U. I am a student in the U. S. So I am being as active as I can from where I am and I sincerly hope that all other Bahamians will do the same. For once lets turn mumbling into action.

I agree. I went to meetings town meetings after the fact and spoke to civilians and officers who were involved. The reports given by the media and rumors were absolutely false. The people involved were a majority Bahamian. Those people were flagrantly assaulted by the police. Some of them have the incident on camera. On thursday, the day after the initial incident a group from the Urban Renewal Project went there to clean up the place and speak to victims. They had cleaned up the area and the people had returned to their homes. There was only about ten people standing around cleaning and talking including the Urban Renewal people. All of a sudden a large group of police lead by the commissioner shows up and starts beating people and firing guns at people and in the air. One of the leaders of Urban renewal was assaulted by an officer. Women were gun butted and beaten with batons. A businessman standing in front of his business was beaten and dragged by officers. People started coming back out of their homes. Seeing their family members being assaulted they started to retaliate by throwing stones and bottles. NO CIVILIANS HAD GUNS.
EVERY PERSON WITHIN THESE BORDERS HAS A RIGHT TO DEFEND THEMSELVES AGAINST ANYONE- INCLUDING POLICE. IF YOU ARE BEING FALSELY ARRESTED YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO (1) PROTEST (2) FIGHT. THAT IS THE LAW. POLICE IN THIS COUNTRY ARE NOTED FOR ABUSING THE POOR LOWER CLASSES. I HAVE SEEN IT WITH MY OWN EYES AND PARTICIPATED IN IT.
EVERYONE HAS RIGHT AND RESPONSE ABILITY TO TAKE THE LAW IN THEIR HANDS. IF I AM ON THE STREET AND I SEE A POLICE OFFICER SHOOTING AT INNOCENT CIVILIANS I HAVE A RIGHT AND DUTY TO STOP HIM. THEY SHOT A YOUNG MAN HOLDING HIS BABY IN THE MOUTH. HOW COULD AN UNARMED MAN HOLDING A BABY BE A THREAT TO POLICE!! COME ON!!
TWO DAYS AFTER ON FRIDAY THE DOCTORS HAD STILL NOT DEALT WITH THIS YOUNG MAN. THEY CALLED HIS MOTHER AND SAID THEY CANNOT TAKE HIM TO SURGERY UNTIL SHE PAYS $800. THIS IS RUBBISH.
THE BEHAVIOR OF MOST OF THE RESIDENTS WAS JUSTIFIABLE. JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED. IF THE POLICE ARE WRONG THEY MUST BE PUNISHED. RESIDENTS WHO WERE WRONG SHOULD ALSO BE PUNISHED. BUT IN THIS CASE I GIVE MORE OFFICERS THAN RESIDENTS WRONG.

If what you are saying is true...it needs to come out. So far the Haitians in that community has been pegged as the aggressors. I have watched the report on TV, and what you are saying is completely contrary to the report....

It is truly amazing as to the differnet accounts shared by some of our members in redards to this very depressing situation that has occured in our country yet again and i fear shall occur several times again unless we show no tolerance to those that choose lawlessness over lawfulness. I too was at the site where this blatant disregard for the laws of our country took place and i was in the area when these hoodlums (who obviously hate law and order and the men and women which are hired to protect and uphold it) insulted my country and demonstrated their lack of respect for themselves and their countrymen. Maybe i was closer than some of the members that express different accounts of what happened, so close in fact that when the lady was struck by the vehicle i along with a young woman attempted to assist her and kept her still and stabilize her until the ambulance got there.
What i saw in fact that evening was when the police attempted to assist the wounded woman by Police vehicle to the hospital because the ambulance was taking too long and a woman that appeared to know the wounded lady was asked to go to the hospital by a police officer (i assume to assist hospital personel with any necessary information in regards to the victim) the woman flew into a rage cursing and yelling at the police . The officers tried to calm her down and this is when all of the attention was diverted away from the victim and to the police officers. A young foolish male relative engaged the officer and acted like a real --- and the group of people that were around showed him great support as a result he 'swoled up' showing that he was a bigger man than the officer , picked up a piece of nassau ( i assume the baby everyone keeps refering to ) and attmepted to buss the officer in he head. I watch the officer back up a couple of steps and pull out his gun and buss it at the man who was still coming with that piece of New Providence in his hand raised over his head . I heard gunshot ,I get low and back up out they way and watch the young man fall on the ground making a bunch of noise.
Now the crowd grow bigger (something new to see ) and the officer walk up to the man and try to stop the man bleeding from the mouth and neck and everybody start making a bunch of noise and cursing at the police and started like they goin' fight with the police so they back up and more police cars show up . Then someone decided that the man who got shot had a good plan so they start to throw rocks and bottles and anything else they could get their hands on ( even the right foot from a pair of brown boots ) so i say to myself the police done shoot one for trying to chap them so i back the hell up by on e shop on the corner.
Now look i thought that was bad but it got a whole lot worse . Plenty police show up and men , women and a bunch of misguided lil children started to roll out the police and break up the police cars and people through the corner started to fire off some guns sounding like they was in some uncivilised country ( like when they having riots in haiti.) so i thought to myself " my car is insured with J.S. Johnson " so i walk thruogh one of the corners and out to the main road . I was out there for a while when i saw some police come speeding out of the corner and a group of people (the road was black with people) came following gun shot firing off and some people actually start to throw firebombs and this group of Police or defence force People come and fire they guns and most of the people break off running except for about thirty (with one big man in one preety suit ) then some loud exlosions went off and i said to myself as i picked up the pace and headed out soldier Rd. (way in the front of a coulpe of others that remembered that we had something very important to do else where), " please tell me they ain lickin' off no rocket launchers."
I watch the news the next day and remembered thinking that we soon have people lit ablaze in the streets with tires around their bodies at this rate like other lawless countries in this world and then i think "No we better than that . Right?"

Please my fellow members try to not alow your own personal negative emotions or GOSSIP to interfere with the facts of such an important topic . Our futures and our country's future is at stake . Blatant diregard for the laws of the bahamas should never be supported or encouraged. It is all of our responsibility to ensure that the law prevails and criminal behaviour and intent be discouraged. this sadly is a response to police sweeps and tighter police presence
and a bi-product of a weak economy coupled with a growing population, part of it being the influx of illegal immigrants.

there will be a day of reconing...and war will break out on the streets!
only so much bahamians can take, and only so much haitians will be able to take.
something has to give...and to be honest the u.s. doesnt give a heck about us, i think secretly they want to destabalize our economy and really make us dependent on them.

u.s. foreign policy is part to blame with the influx of haitians staying in the bahamas, and not being ingested into the american system..all becasue i fear to say racism..seriously!

it is not too late though... there is a lot we can do to stem haitian immigrations, and clean up our streets...but we have to act now and think in the long term.

just a side note...
kemp road riot was not haitian
the market street chaos was not haitian
and
the st james road riot was not of haitian origin...
but, this is a time to make a strong push against haitian illegals here, and bahamian thugs alike...
and....to train police officers properly in investigation methods..becasue the common thread in all of these incidents are the police...whether they started it or are in danger or not!

Your account differs from that of the police involved and others there. You want us to believe that your friendly neighborhood police officer asked a citizen to accompany an injured woman to to hospital and everyone got so offended that they proceeded to lynch the officer for no reason. What ever.
I am feeling what yk2 was saying; the Kemp rd incident was not haitian related. Neither was a myriad of similar incidents. The common denominator in all these incidents is the police.

i was told from a bahamian that lives a couple blocks away, that it was haitian bahamians and that the bahamians that got involved were troublemakers in the area already.

Why are people surprised about these being Haitian-Bahamians?

when you belittle a group long enough they are gonna get fed up and attack. Maybe if we had treaten them as human beings in the first place the nassau village riot maybe wouldn't have happened
