Are we prepared?
Urgent need to address critical and impending matters

Our need to be concerned at present is not without reason. All arrows are pointing to an economic collapse in this region within this year. The implications for the Bahamas will be disastrous if we do not prepare ourselves fully for what is undoubtedly impending.

Are we prepared?

I believe that our biggest problem is one of security. The protection of our resources will be even more vital in the months to come as poverty levels increase in neighboring nations such as Haiti, Jamaica, Honduras and the Dominican Republic. The condition of Haiti is no secret to us but added with the current economic crises in the United States we should prepare ourselves for an influx of immigrants at record breaking levels. Additionally we can also expect an increase in poaching as the demand for food raises in neighboring countries. Drug and human trafficking will also significantly increase. We cannot expect our Defense Force to properly manage these problems. I am of the belief that our Defense Force, at its present state will not be sufficient even to handle an extreme rate of migrants crossing our borders. Because of this we need to employ more protection for our waters.

The Government’s Role in Food

If the current solution to weathering this recession is self sufficiency we must invest more into protecting our marine resources, reduce or eliminate the export of seafood and stop depending solely on farmers to grow food. The Government of the Bahamas must take control and insure that sufficient foods are being produced and kept locally to sustain the country during the hard times ahead.

Internal Peace

A decision has to be made urgently on how we deal with and prevent extreme forms of criminal behavior. Is it possible that we would survive for long being faced with both an economic and social crises? These two ills will cripple even the strongest nation. This is without a doubt the time to change laws and get hard on criminals. Persons who possess illegal firearms are to be seen (in my opinion) as equal to robbers and murders. Those who traffic in illegal arms should face the death penalty. I believe that unless we change with the times we will be lost in it. We need to clean the streets of persons who are out on bail for serious crimes as these will more than likely the greatest challenge for the police in the coming months.

May God be with us and preserve us this year the thereafter.

To answer your question “Are we prepared?” I would say not only are we not prepared. We are not even getting ready, to get ready, to be prepared!

You know how we go. We don’t even put up our shutters till the wind starts blowing!

I agree wholeheartedly with u CG... I think our biggest downfall in this country is that we are not a proactive nation we are reactive!! :cutie:

this spirit of reaction will be our downfall!!

I could even live with it if we are reactive, but reacted quickly but we don’t even do that. We drag our feet until the cost of acting grows.

Too true, too true. We only start reacting when the consequences start looming and the blame's getting thrown around. We are nowhere near ready for any crisis that may come our way. Forget crime, food and security; please Lord, don't let a hurricane come this way this season, cause Bahamians would be in problems. *knocks on wood*

all good thoughts, but i don't think that we should expect government to do the work for us ... what happened to individual initiative?

the colonial overlords of the past may have tried to coax such self-reliance out of the system, but we threw off that patronizing yoke in 1973, people :cutie:.

Have we really though? Nassau is handout city. People all around looking at the governement and other organizations for something or another. Even on BI, some people here think that Brent (Symonette) should have given mothers in his constituency cash for Mother's day! Individual initiative is dying if not dead and buried.

As long as we are totally dependant on the government for keeping the economy afloat we will continue to be unstable. Most economies are only stable when the private sector and entreprenuers take the lead in controlling the economy and the govern play a minor role by setting proper regulation and policy to assist the business owners.

Until this view in taken it will be more of the same sadly.

THe Hatian boats out in the Harbour are task #1. Why are they not checked? We need to regulate those things, not only because the US thinks it is a threat to their security, it is a direct threat to ours.

What happened to the one plane that we allegedly have for the defence force. Why is that not doing some kind of patrol work in Inagua? I don't know the specific of OPBAT, but are we sharing defence information with the Turks and Caicos? If they spot illegal immigrant transportation, then we should be on alert, we need much air power.

Every and any initiative by people who want to get in to argiculture must be supported. Fish farms et. al. If we can subsdize do so. People need to eat, they cannot live on and eat free trade principles. I do not see techniches and technology passed on to farmers.

And on poaching we need some dialogue with the countries that are letting this happen. If Bahamians were poaching in US water, I am sure we would at least be hearing a mouthfull from someone in the Embassy or the State Department. We need to be merciless on the people who rob the Bahamian people, and place pressure on countries like the DR, whose citizens flaunt their disregard for our laws and property. Sieze the fishing boats and release them to Bahamian fisherman on auction or lottery, or at extremely discounted prices.

I don't know about death, but the laws need to be crushing. However we can't do anything about prosecutions if the judiciary is not reformed. The country should be divided into regions with their own prosecution office for the Attorney General. There needs to be more courts, a facility on more major islands, if not a system matching the T&C in which the accused will attent court virtually.

We need much more Judges recruiting needs to be more agressive. Increase the pay and perks. Lawyers believe that they will miss out on their own revenue by taking charge of the courts. We must win them, and just saying, "do it for the state" is a lame approach.....if it is one. Reveiw the rules to how judges conduct in court, the length of adjornments etc. To uphold the public confidence in the judicial system exclude people who have been pending criminal accusations in the Bahamas court or foreign courts from serving as long as that matter sustains, taking into exception that that matter does not end in a conviction, convictions excluding minor offences such a traffic violations (parking tickets etc.) That is somethings to do if we decide not to take on any more foreign judges.

That's my mouth full......
