Bahamas Flag Etiquette

Bahamas Flag etiquette is very strict and it is essential that Flag protocols and rules are followed correctly

Basic Flag Etiquette applies to all nations, including Bahamas as follows:

The United Nations uses alphabetical order when presenting a national flag including the Bahamas Flag. Their flag etiquette ensures that no one country's flag has precedence over another country's flag

The National flag of Bahamas should never be flown above another national flag on the same staff as this would suggest superiority, or conversely, inferiority of one flag, or Nation, over another

The Bahamas flag should never be allowed to drag along the ground

A tattered or faded flag of Bahamas should be removed and replaced with a new flag

Due care and consideration must be taken to ensure that the Bahamas flag is always flown the correct way up

A Flag of Bahamas, when in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning in private with all due care and respect

Terminology & Etiquette in Bahamas Flag display
Hoist - the act or function of raising the Bahamas flag, as on a rope

Half Staff or Half Mast - the Bahamas flag is hoisted to half of the potential height of the flag pole to denote grief and mourning

Performed by first raising the Bahamas flag to the top, then lowering the Bahamas Flag halfway

Distress - denoted by flying the Bahamas flag upside-down

Manner of hoisting - The Bahamas flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously

No disrespect should be shown to the Bahamas flag

The Bahamas flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit the Flag to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way

The Bahamas flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing on the flag of any nature

The Bahamas flag should be hoisted first and lowered last

International Flag relating to Bahamas Flag usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace

I can understand the same staff maybe, but I always thought that the Bahamian flag should be flown slightly higher than another countries flag on another staff.

To my knowledge the host flag is flown above all others,I stand to be corrected. :)

The flag at my condo flies higher than the Canadian and US flag. I think in the states the US flag is highest. Maybe an American set up our flag system.

LOL

Songbird, I was wondering the same thing. You should have seen me trying to figure out the difference, going through the flag description in my mind... "Equilateral triangle... Three horizontal strips of equal width... Hmmm..."
LOL

Its against the law to fly a international flag without a Bahamian flag centered at a higher point in the Bahamas. For example a person cannot fly a Jamaican Flag in their yard in the Bahamas in view of the public having to see it without having the Bahamian flag hung at a higher stance beside it. To break this law a culprit could pay a penalty of $1500 or spend 2 months in prison. Only the Ambassordor of a country can fly his countrys flag at their embassy grounds on same stance as the Bahamian flag.

I had da book trown at me in college fer posting da bahamian flag on da outside of my dorm room door!! First I refused ta take it dawn but after being schooled dat my haitian roommate could object and further it was illegal to put another nation's flag on da outside of a private residence.

My haitian roomie did not object. . .they allowed me to keep it there and I had to promise dat I would not display it outside the dorm!! Dem did not even allow dixie to be displayed outside dem windows!! Dem told me dat to hoist a flag is an international sign of territory. . .das why embassies can fly dem!!!! Dis bring back ta mind when dem cubans gone on cay sal in da 60s and hoist dem flag. . .bahamians dem gone dawn dere wid guns and ting and run dem off. . .dem was saying dat cay sal was they own. . .so dem plant they flag as a sign dat dem take it back fer theysef!!

Dem tell me das an international rule like dem call sign codes and shipping rules dem!!:hammer:

Well one thing I have started to notice as a trend around here are this young Haitian feallas putting multiple small Haitian Flags all over there cars. I am in no way a racist, but to me some times it feels like blantant arragance on there behalf. Like they are making a statement of dominance " We Taking Over"!!!!

That is standard Flag Etiquette for just about any country. How ever one can't tell of the distress part as which side of our flag is the top?

But why is is as Bahamians we don't put our flags on our cars?I see the Haitans and Jamaicans always have on something whether it is a shirt with their countries colors,or even a bandana, even they have their countries colors on their car liscense plate. Is it that even though they are economically unstable, they are proud of where they are from?In the Bahamas, we had to beg some of our own radio stations to play Bahamian music.but when you go in the Caribbean, these people have their music playin in all their stores and in the streets. Why do we always wait the week of July 10 to try and find something with Bahamian colors on it? Do we truly love the Bahamas? Why don't we show National Pride?
