The government recently announced that while it would not admit any fault on the part of any government agency, it would make a $1 million ex gratia payment to the victims as a gesture of goodwill.

That was good enough for the victims two weeks ago when they praised the government's decision to make the gift, but as they came out of the AG's office, one by one, their faces registered a look of discontent.
Another victim, Cedric Hart, who was in a coma for nearly two years as a result of the crash, echoed what some of the others said when he remarked that the amount he received could not even begin to cover his medical expenses.

"I left the (check) up there. I don't want to deal with it," he said. He declined further comment.

Tennyson Leslie, who lost his wife and his leg in the crash, was not as distraught as some of the others.

We came out here brisk and happy, basically expecting not $1 million but something to make us happy and help make ends meet and all that," Antonio said. "But the majority of us are not happy with what we've received :hammer::hammer:

as I see it that 1 million dollars is nothing but a payoff or buyout of the victims so the case would not go to court. same as when michael jackson is accused of child molestation and he buys out or pays off the complainants so the case would not go to court because he may be guilty. so what is the government guilty of. negligence miscarriage of authourity. as I have stated before these mailboats should never get the OK to be used as booze cruise party boats. they surpass the passenger limits by hundreds. then there is all that drinking onboard. alcohol and the sea don't mix. you can't have passengers drunk and partying on a mailboat. someone's head needs to roll in the government. thing is this has been going on for so many years that both political parties are guilty of continuosly giving the OK for these death trap cruises on the open seas. so like I said, that 1 million ain't nothing but a buyout because the goverment is guilty of making a bad decision. and they don't want that come out in court.

LOL..if it was a buyout they would have been asked to sign a waiver..they werent. They are free to turn right around after getting those checks and sue the government.

The government was not directly obligated to pay those victims, but my question is when are the boat operators going to civil court to be held liable?

We have been asking this question here on BI since the accident happened.

According to regular BI posters, the owners are STILL operating in the Bahamas and are in thick with the government. Shake that tree and goodness knows what will fall out.

Exactly, there is no indication right now that the government has any legal fault. Now the operators, that is a different question.
