In one week we've had a murder on popular Cabbage beach and a tourist shot by cable beach.....the people over at Ministry of Tourism and the PR people must be freaking out.

I always keep thinking that the next outrage will be the “straw that breaks the camel’s back” But it never is. I wonder how many “straws” we will have to load on the back of this country before something breaks - either our tourist industry, or governmental lethergy.:sparky:

We keep preaching to the choir. We are the choir. Ween going round killing and shooting, RIGHT? The ones doing that, neither listen to their parents, friends..good lawabiding friends, nor do they care about us in particular and society in general. They een care bout no Tourism!! They een care bout no reputation!! They do not care. FULL STOP!! They were looking for an opportunity and those hapless tourist walked right into it.

A woman who was with the cop when he got shot, was on the news last night. She said it could happen anywhere and they are not going to allow that incident to spoil their perception of The Bahamas. She went on to say that while her friend was being shot, someone she knows had been robbed (i believe) in anothrr State. These things happen, was her opinion. They were 'just' in the wrong place at the wrong time she says.

Whew, I'm glad she felt like that. I'm sure it was due to the after care they all recieved by witnesses, the police and the hospital staff. The victim and the others in the group, realise they cannot hold the incident against the whole Bahamas.

Sadly though, we MUST demand more is done. If New York, which was once a dangerous place to visit, especially the Manhattan area, could be cleaned up, and is now safe, so can Nassau.

BUT!! A big BUT!! Are we prepared to swallow what has to be done to get cleaned up? All petty crimes will be met with zero tolerance. Not all have to jail time or fines either. They can be community service. OPEN, PUBLIC community service. OR, Mr so and so are seen on TV being charged with crimes not just the "TUGS."

Not untill enough of us get really, REALLY fed up will we demand it.

Can you imagine how fast things will turn around if the churchmen, the politicians, and mostly the parents.... ALL say NO!! When asked for help in getting people out of trouble. Imagine that!!

I'm glad she took it in stride, but will other potential vistors?

The disappointing thing for me CG is that no one in the government has yet to make a statement, not the PM, not Tommy. So what are we the local ppl to think and what are the tourist to think.

This might be a case of “least said, soonest mended.”

I remember when the school boy was shot on Bay Street and a tourist was asked to comment and he said pretty much the same thing..that these things happen everywhere, so they may be less shocking to foreigners than they are to us. When I let my daughter in London know about the stabbing death right next to the Riu (where she stayed two months ago), her only comment was that they get similar incidents every week in their area. Again, to foreigners, it is more commonplace.

Having said that, I don't mean for one moment that we should just accept this violence and become complacent....not at all. Many people see the Bahamas as a "Paradise" and we would like to perpetuate that perception.
