I am taking a stand and will not ever travel to Exuma. After several friends where harassed and threatned because they where not fishing with "approved" Exuma guides and trying to fish on their own. The amazing thing was that they used these "approved" guides for two days prior and wanted to try and search for fish on their own. They did not even go to the same flats that they fished with the guides. They where told if they wanted to fish, they needed to use one of the guides. If they wanted to fish on their own, they needed to go to another Island or in fact. Does not sound like a very good situation and a lot of people are talking about this. I recognize that the this is the lively hood for these guides but extortion like this will hurt the economy in Exuma and other places that have this happening.

That doesn't sound too good; Does the fishing permit you have specify that you must use a guide when in Exuma (or any other island for that matter)? If, by law, you must hire a guide, then one cannot argue that; however, if they're just trying to hustle you for a quick buck, then by all means you should report that activity to the proper authorities.

Exuma is a lovely place the people are friendly and I grew up there so I know. This is just one instance, go to another island!

There is no permit required to fish and NOT keep fish in the bahamas while wading. This is a confirmed fact with the local and national goverment. That is my point exactly...extortion. And to tiaesq, you say you grew up there and the folks are welcoming yet you tell me to go to another Island ? And the fact is this is not an isolated incident. I know more than 15 people from my fishing circles who have now had issues in Exuma. Maybe your last sentence truely sums up the issues on Exuma and with the guides.

Tiaesq.....

I am sure all of the business owners on Exuma will appreciate you telling people to go to another Island.

Bury your head in the sand and the problem will go away. Until no one travels to Exuma because it is unsafe. Good approach.

To Tiaesq:

That was a response that you obviously did not think about before posting. I hope that not all Exumians display the attitude you have when dealing with our tourist. If a tourist to our shores faces a similar situation as outlined by Bahamamommabonefish, you dont simply tell them to go away and go to another island, you try to help them with as much hospitality and civilty that you can muster, or anyone for that matter, tourist or not. Please do not be ignorant to the fact that tourist also visit Bahamasissues and read ignorant posts like these.

To Bahamamommabonefish I hope that your situation can be solved, and thatyou wont turn your back on Exuma. It is a lovely island, with many warm friendly people, it just has a few bad apples as is the case anywhere.

I respect the tourist edge and all but that was between me and Bahamamommabonefish. Exuma is the "sailing capitol of the world" - all tourist are dying to get there! My post is innocent to say the least and Ill go further in saying any Exumian would defend our ISLAND just the same. Your making a big deal over other people's matters of opinion, (need I remind you that everyone has one!),your response was too aggressive and out of line WRT to me, there are far better things to be concerned about. Please, Bahamamommabonefish will have gotten over her gripe with Exuma after April and she'll tell about the wonderful time she had at Regatta! ;)

My response was too agressive :what: , what do you call "Go to another island", if you dont like ours. Its not only agressive but an arrogant and senseless thing to say and to a tourist of all people. I am not making a big deal over your opinion, but the way in which you choose to present it, which gives us all a bad name here. My mother is an Exumian, and I know that she would not have dealt with it like that, in fact she would have had some couth in dealing with the situation. I doubt Bahamamommabonefish will get over this one after reading your series of remarks, in fact he/she may be so pissed that they will pass on regatta. Lets hope his/her umpteen friends who may want to visit Exuma dont get wind of this type of behaviour. It only takes a spark to start a fire.

You are the only one sparking flames and blowing this way out of proportion, reading into nothing too deeply. My love and appreciation for Exuma is just that, and I will defend that always.
No need to embark on this riotous course your insinuating, why Bahamamommabonefish and her friends will be at Regatta having a merry time!
While were at it, I would encourage going to other family islands- they all serve as breathtaking experiences...oops! I forgot, Exuma is the and all !!!!!
(Your mother would agree- Now that's arrogance!)

Now that was below the belt, what gives. Where is your Bahamian pride, decency (and shame) when you need it most. Me having a degree is a piece of paper that only implies that im over qualified to wash dishes. It's nothing to dispise me for having. Anyone can have one, all you have to do is pay for it! Without experiece, or someone giving me an opportunity to showcase my skill, I fall short of what that degree is suppose to accomplish...being a being gainfully employed contributor to my society! Its actually in Economics, ensuring that the tourist dollars are allocated efficiently!
With that said, we would love all tourist and Bahamians to visit Exuma and contribute to our island's economic growth and development who did not allow one person's minute experience as being the final decision in not coming.
You are too funny, but I love you my Bahamian sister anyway!

Yes, having a degree in today's society does not amount to as much as one would think, and that is clearly obvious. 80% of what we learn is outside of the classroom, which includes how to interact with our fellow man and woman, and how to deal with conflicts when they arise. In any event I will leave you to your learning. Good luck with those tourist dollars and the tourists.
