Group threatens Parliament demonstration:

http://www.thenassauguardian.com/national_local/336856801866288.php

..."Millar's Creek Preservation Group Chairman Emmanuel McKenzie said their complaint of brutality against the Bahamian armed forces to Humanitarian group Amnesty International is just the tip of the iceberg when compared to what they have in store for Bahamian officials."........
...."While 11 letters have been received so far, Barnes said Acting Commissioner of Police Reginald Ferguson, Minister of National Security and Immigration Tommy Turnquest, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Brent Symonette, are probably receiving "hundreds" of letters.

The Minister of National Security was said to be off the island and calls made to Minister Symonette were not returned up to press time.

The Millar's Creek Preservation Group alleged last month that the Police Force, Defence Force and the Department of Immigration used undue force on the patrons in attendance at a recent fundraiser hosted by the group, verbally and physically abused those present and destroyed their property during a "raid" at Millar's Creek, off Bacardi Road.".......

Here is a thread that discussed this issue earlier and the original press release from the organization:

Worth watching.

That's what I'm thinking.

When this first came out I didn't pay much attention.
But now I find it interesting that this group was protesting the illegal and controversial development being carried out by Tennyson Wells and then suddenly their meeting/gathering is broken up by what seems to be a very large joint operation of police, defense force, and immigration.
Things that make you go hmmmmm.......

Everyone who is protesting needs to take a trip to some parts of south Africa, so that they can understand what abuse and misuse of power really is.

The inherent problem with this entire scenario is that a warrant was issued, assertive force was presented and illegal immigrants were found to be participating in a public festival.

Of course, "seeking investigation" simply is terminology for the local branch of Amnesty International to check out the facts before they actually make noise AND inadvertently make fools out of themselves.

The strategic plan that was implemented by joint forces of this Bahamas needed to be executed exactly as it was. Some people need to be told straight and plain that THE BAHAMAS is not a country where you come in and do as you please.

This is why it is important for this nation to ensure that those who grace our shores RESPECT this nation and what it stands for.

To all Law officers and the politicians who will give them directions of how to handle this: Be wary of these folks. They will push things to the edge, hoping to evoke something that will attract Amnesty's attention. Make certain that all of your officers deal with any demonstration (if there is any) professionally and quickly.

In spite of all of this, it is clear that misjudgement and abuse of power were done by the police etc al. Therefore, this issue needs to be investigated and the protestors needs to push this to the limit. Simply because the results of this investigation will make the Bahamas better.

Exactly!!!
Buey objective, picturing you passing out there, and stop for some fritters...and all of the sudden you hear some gun shots, then police bytch slap you for just being there. And when you try to explain that, boss, I just hear for the fritters man, I even don't know these people, then the police then threaten to kill ya and burry you out there in the bush...

Apparently such an incident is being suggested is exactly what happened to a number of BAHAMIANS that were out there. Man something has to be wrong with that...

In spite of all of this, it is clear that misjudgement and abuse of power were done by the police etc al. That has not been shown to be true. Exaggerations and rumors fly around this little town like mosquitoes with malaria. Time for some Baygon.

Seems like the citizens of this Bahamaland have decided for some strange reason to prevent the police from doing their job and/or make it difficult for them to do it in the future. We cry out for something to be done about the crime in this nation, but when the police come into our area, we instantly claim police brutality (even when those who are apprehended by the police actively cuss and fight against them).

What do you expect an officer who is experiencing resistance to do? Give the apprehended person a "grease-down" and a shiatsu?

Trust your police and defense forces and WATCH OUT for those who actively attempt to undermine their moves to maintain some semblance of control in this funky little town!

The police and defense forces are our front line against a very DANGEROUS criminal element that is growing in this country. They know now that when they go in that they must proceed with assertion and confidence, quickly quelling situations that if handled with a "light hand" will turn ugly.

AND TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE OUT THERE WITH "HARD MOUTHS" AND WHO "T'INK DEY BAD"...when an officer approaches you, be compliant and obey their instructions! IF you have nothing to hide, why give the officers a hard time? THEY ARE JUST DOING THEIR JOB!

That is true, but what about at the same time those minority of officers who abuse there power and undermine and put fellow officers in danger. So, if they do wrong should we sweep there actions under the rug?? Now, i wont comment on this topic for i know nothing of it. Wrong is wrong and there are officers out there that take it to the extremes and Desmond Key is an example of this. As is a number of incidents that have happened in the last year or so. People shouldn't be scared of those there to protect them. Now, these actions of these rogue officers dont reflect the actions of the other ones. Just a thought

Both of you...THINK!

Do you really believe that in a major operation such as the one being discussed that individual officers would take the INCREASED risk of abusing their powers? That is the equivalent of saying that EVERYONE who partook in that exercise was corrupt!

That, by default, is saying that we can't and shouldn't trust our police force.

Think about it! Really think about it.

All past cases of police force abuse have been individual and isolated. THIS instance was a mass operation with numerous civilian and personnel witnesses!

You guys appear to have no understanding of how our forces need to have the flexibility to go in and control a crowd without fear of being automatically branded as villains.

Perhaps you guys would have been happier if they had went in there "tiptoeing around" halfheartedly and the whole thing happened to turn into a riot because the force "didn't want to step on anyone's toes". When dealing with a crowd, forces worldwide are trained to isolate and control the "unruly" or potentially volatile persons quickly and harshly, otherwise it can snowball and lives could be lost!

AGAIN I REPEAT: Those who try to actively undermine our police force in such a way are not to be trusted. Personally, as a citizen who pays them their salaries, I want them to go in and make sure that they are respected! They are the Police and Defense FORCE, not the Police and Defense "let me do this in a way that your feelings don't get hurt".

Bottom line...they need to be able to do their job. IF there was a legitimate concern, there are more appropriate ways to handle it. This BS about a demonstration shows that the persons involved are only "opportunistic activists", riling up the people because they know that we have become a nation who would rather mistrust the police, than let them do what they are supposed to do.

At the end of this, the Bahamian people will decide whom they believe more...stay tuned
