View Full Version : How is it that our government 'allows' large companies to get away w/o paying NI?
FACTS ONLY 05-27-08, - 01:04 PM How is it allowed?
Not only that, these companies deduct National Insurance from the pay checks of their staff. Does NI ever get that money back?
Does the employee then have a gap in their work history?
Pioneer Shipping is the lastest to have been accused by its former staff of not paying NI.
The staff also claim that the health insurance ended in December but they were not told. WOW!!
SpamStopper 05-27-08, - 01:07 PM and how would an employee know if the company was not paying National Insurance?
Lady_chippie 05-27-08, - 01:11 PM Why do we wait until something happens to act?
NI has a number that you can call to find out If your NI contributions are being paid, so If they are not NI can act on it right away.
Im feel for these 9 people (no joke)
I hope the company doesnt take to long to pay them what they are owed....
The amount of years some of them have been there they will get a nice lump some and hopefully that can carry them though.

It it fair to say that the government is responsible for this. I think it is the slack practices of some one person or persons at National Insurance. I think it is due to a lack of follow up on behalf of a department or departments at National Insurance. If you are keeping accurate records someone should be able to pick up when something has lapsed. Alot of the times people just keep lousy records or have staff working who do not know how to properly research, file and keep records of these things and who do not follow up on anything. It is not until the people go to collect their monies then they realize there is a gap in the system. When they noticed that funds where not comning in from the company they should have done some kind of investigation to find out why, but gubment workers let things sit and pile up and then when the stuff fly all round the room after the fan hit it then people blame the gubment. Some of these gubment workers een never gat the gubment back, don't let it be the gubment they aint put there. Pure slackness. Just my humble opinion.

Normally whem someone claims NI would tell them there NI payments are not up to date, this is one way an employee is alerted !!!!
I guess no one has claimed in awhile.

Thats it there, they have staff dedicated to cracking down or suppose to be!!!
Someone needs to find out why this company slipped through the cracks.

Yep, but you see an employee could be saying this but does not mean it is true. Also, they mentioned health insurance, well thats obvious since the company went out of business, its more than likely they went out of business for a reason, no money to pay bills.
NIH can go after businesses though if they have not paid for any period of time, its like a percentage of what they should have paid, fines etc, basically a whole ton of money. There's a whole section on it in the laws online, cant remember the exact details.

Im wondering now, what happens If the company had no money to pay bills and only the staff?
Didnt another company buy them out? (help me out here)

When they try to get benefits, like when they take maternity leave or something like that, I guess...

Oh ABSOLUTELY!!
You see at the end of the day, and I'm not even talking about if a person has to claim from NI. I'm talking about the pension stage.
NIB is constantly complaaining that because ours is a relatively young country, contributions are not lining up with what is being paid out. Tehy also suggest that in a short time contributions will HAVE to be increased.
Since THEY are the one who has to pay pensions, it is incumbunt(sp) on them to ensure that contributions are made and on a timely basis.
Just recently, NIB officers were in the 'straw' market harrassing the vendors telling them that they had failed to make their contributions.
If officers can be deployed to the market, well by Dam, they can be deployed to ANY company which defaults.
The former employers of Royal Oasis walsted out of this country after doing the same sheet!! AND...........after deducted from their employees no less.
