my thing is, this should have been abundantly evident when Mr. Taylor's body was found in his home.

Either the police are doing NOTHING, or they are conducting a top secret investigation into the entire matter, like havin two officers on the job or something, slowly gathering information, bound by confidentiality agreements and are about to crack the case.
