A City Market manager and cashier were arraigned in two separate matters on Tuesday, with the manager facing charges of arm robbery and conspiracy, and the cashier facing charges of stealing by reason of employment.

It is alleged that the 21-year-old manager of City Market, Cable Beach, Vernon Dean of Vista Marina, while along with others were responsible for the May 24 robbery in which Agnes Mackey was allegedly robbed of $14,000 of cash belonging to the food store.

Police also allege that Dean may have been the mastermind behind the robbery and had conspired with others to have the robbery carried out.

When Dean was led to court a number of City Market employees stood on the sideline in support of the manager, stating that he is not guilty.

According to police, sometime after 10 p.m., employees at the store were at work when two masked gunmen entered and demanded cash. As a result, an undetermined amount of money was removed from cash registers and a safe. The robbers subsequently escaped in an unknown direction.

Dean was not required to plead to the charges, however, after his attorney Michael Kemp raised an issue to the court related to his client being allegedly beaten. Dean was allowed to explain to the court what had transpired while he was in police custody.

According to Dean, a confession was allegedly beaten out of him by a number of officers while he was in custody. Dean also alleged that a garbage bag was placed over his head in an attempt to smother him, and he added that he was handcuffed and was made to lay face down on the floor.

In addition, Dean alleged that he was forced to sign untrue statements, which outlined that he was a party to the robbery.

Attorney Kemp had attempted to have the garbage bag, which was allegedly used on Dean, turned into the court as evidence and secured for DNA testing, however, Magistrate Susan Sylvestor reprimanded the attorney, stating that he should know better than to make that type of request.

She therefore set a preliminary inquiry date for September 12. Dean was remanded to Her Majesty's Prison until that time.

Meanwhile, 26-year-old, Nacara Goodman of Fox Hill was arraigned before the chief magistrate on 15 counts of stealing by reason of employment.

It is alleged that the cashier, throughout the month of February, stole $6,110 from City Market, SeaGrape Shopping Plaza.

The woman pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the amount of $6,000 with two sureties. The matter was adjourned until July 21.

blp you is a real dumb azz!
I guess Rodney King and Amadou Diallo and all the other black men who are abused in the U.S. by police officers deserve to be treated as subhuman. Any educated individual must recognize that the weak will always be beaten into an admission of guilt if you beat them long and hard enough or try to suffocate them. If they held you for the crime, although falsely, I bet you woulda scream like a lil biatch. It wouldn't be ok for them to do it to you, and it isn't ok for the police to continue to force admissions of guilt out of suspects.....not in a civil society.

You would think by now the police would videotape interrogations to prevent these types of accusations levied against them. I suspect, because the police haven't videotaped this confession, that they have something to hide. Not excusing criminals, but with a good lawyer, one of these days these physically induced confessions by the police are going to burn a prosecutor very shortly if it has not done so already.

This is what I was thinking also. Almost everyone brought before the courts claim police brutality.Seems like some of the magistrates dont even pay attention to these claims.Videotape confessions would speed up many of these trials and eliminate claims of false confessions.
