View Full Version : Roaming Dogs and it's effect on Tourism in the Bahamas
asterz57 02-26-03, - 10:30 PM I am a student at The College of the Bahamas, myself along with my Social Research class is doing a research on Roaming Dogs and the effect it has on Tourism in the Bahamas.
I would like to get your opinion on the roaming dog crisis here in the Bahamas, if you feel that we do have a problem and what we can do to solve that problem.
Any suggestions, comments are gladly welcomed, thank you.
kidcrow50@hotmail.com 02-26-03, - 11:39 PM There is a Goverment Department that is responsible for the capturing a detainment of roaming dogs. Maybe you can contact them a see if they are aware of roaming dogs in that area in which you have seen them in
Delroy 02-26-03, - 11:41 PM I think that Pot Cakes are a trademark in our society.
They were here before us so I don't feel that we have the right to dictate where they must walk or not. When I see them lil fleabags walking downtown acting like they own Bay Street it reminds me that I am still in Nassau.
I agree that they pose some health risks but thats because Nassau is dirty on the whole. If we would take the time to cleanup our yard and secure our trash properly then these dogs would be cleaner than the average house pets. I don't think that the lil bit of Pot Cakes walking downtown or on the beach is going to cause a problem with our guests.
The only time Tourists really complain is when they see a dog on the road that has been abused by their owner or some other fool who decided to stone the harmless K9. I think that Pot Cakes make the Bahamas different from other tourist destinations and we should be proud of them and acknowledge them as a part of our culture. Just because you cant find a stray dog in downtown Miami doesn't mean we have to follow suite.
I say yes to controlling the population of stray dogs, yes to cleaning up our community but no to removing these animals completely from our scenery.
My Goodness! We have a lifeless conch shell and a Pigeon we don't even see anymore on the airport road. I say we need to do the Pot Cakes some justice by making a lil statue for them and place it right downtown. What you think?
kidcrow50@hotmail.com 02-26-03, - 11:54 PM I have recently been informed that this a very controversial issue. Seeing that this the case. Anything that is a danger to our tourism industry should be address and recterfy with swiftness. I am very shocked that there isn't any effort made to clean up this matter.
pevans 09-11-03, - 09:51 PM Forget about roaming dogs (very few in downtown Bay Street) and worry more about the roaming rats!! They are everywhere and more off putting for tourists i'm sure.
dont really care what its effect on tourism is, but just as with moped rentals and school kids, they need to get them off the road as they pose a danger to drivers in nassau.
I had to stop and wait for a dying dog to drag its self off the road one day, in the middle of traffic down bay street (right near hoffers). It had been hit by another car that kept going, and noone watching on the sidewalks could call the humane society. people were just laughing, as it crawled away, swinging deleirously, tripping etc. as it had mush have had brain damage from the hit.
ANyway, along with rotten mashed dogs every day on the roads of nassau, left in place to be run over and over and over thousands of times until there is nothing but a mark left which is eventually washed away from the rain ...well its a flippin discrace and I think the majority of bahamians are very inhumane.

You lost your credibility when you quoted downtown Miami. Have you seen it lately? Downtown Nassau looks wayyyyy better.

Oh my, perish the thought.
I like my potcakes - Royal Bahamian Terriers :)
I do think that they the road kill neads to be removed more expediently though.
the rats got to go, i see one every day. But if we remove all the rats then we will probably end up with more mangy cats. lol.
anyway I think the beggars and bums are our biggest problem, the dogs don't bother me much. Just the dead ones that stay in the roads for weeks.
But if I had a choice I would say leave the dead dogs and fill in all the darn pot holes.

Teniel 01-27-05, - 05:28 PM I am very afraid of dogs, especially big ones, call it canine phobia. What I hate though are people that have 6 and 7 dogs following behind them on the streets like a bunch of security guards or something. In many instances these dogs get overprotective and agressive over their owner when a pedestrian indiscriminantley passes them by, attacking innocent pedestrians. I tired a trowin bottle an rock, and hauling a** ( I know ya shouldn't run, but) when da debbil getup inside dese mutts, and de stupid owners say dey don bite. What da dogs gat teet fa?
YorickBrown 01-27-05, - 10:12 PM As I was driving today, a little kid rode past a driveway and a potcake sprang out from behind a wall at him.
I've never seen anyone pick up speed on a bicycle so quickly! It gave me a brief chuckle at that moment, but on second thought it wouldn't have been such a lighthearted moment if the kid had panicked and swerved out into the road in front of the car ahead of me or if the dog had been able to catch him...
That potcake was really snapping at him as if he wanted to get a bite or two. This was a local experience, but we all know that tourists sometimes find themselves riding those rental mopeds through the neighborhoods, and some of them can't handle scooters that well. "Attack of the Bahamian Potcakes - a CNN exclusive" - Can you see it?
abaco0 02-21-05, - 02:19 PM I don't understand why there are no spaying and neutering laws. The problem is not only in Nassau, but on all of the islands. Stray dogs are not a problem, but a concern. If people took responsibility in the first place there would not be nearly as many stray dogs. If you own a dog have it fixed to cut down on the growing number of dogs on the islands.
I would like to know if there any laws in place?
I don't understand how people can be so cruel and heartless when it comes to another living creature. I see dozens of strays dead and alive alongside of the roads. I have seen people physically abusing these dogs. I know that people also poison these dogs. This goes on all over in the Abaco's, Treasure Cay and Cooperstown to be specific. Recently a friend of mine had one of his dogs poisoned. Potcakes are incredible dogs, I personally have 3.
If anybody knows of any existing laws please share the information.
