View Full Version : Work permit in Nassau
KTM 950 06-04-08, - 09:14 PM I need to get a work permit for my engineering job . I'm a heat design engineer that deals with machine design and hardware including making use of heat processes and transfer. (I don' think I will be taking anyone job, but who knows)
My company agrees to pay 50% of my work permit. If all the paper work is legal and ready ,how long would it take to get the work permit and how much would it cost? If I need to use an attorney, I will. (the company will pay for that ) I begin my new job in October
Thanks

When was your paper work submitted???
Little Fisherman 06-04-08, - 09:18 PM so many questions, my boy
1. You can not apply for your work permit while in the Bahamas
2. You can only come here for a 3 month Visa showing you have funds to support yourself.
3. After that, you can apply for up to an additional 5 months.
4. If no work permit and/or status for you and your wife etc, your a$ $ is back where you came from
5. Good Luck
6. Have your future employer do all the paperwork and sit back and home and wait and wait and wait

Sounds like it was not submitted, thats why I wrote the book
KTM 950 06-04-08, - 09:24 PM The company is going to start the process for the work permit soon. I will get it before I come, for sure. I still have 4 months. Does anyone know how long it takes or costs? I'm bugging everyone because I have to pay 50% and I hear it thousands of $$
Thanks
Little Fisherman 06-04-08, - 09:47 PM Hiring Employees:
If you plan to hire non-Bahamian employees for your household or business in the Bahamas make sure to get work permits. In order to work in the Bahamas an employee must have a valid work permit.
Furthermore, the Bahamas Immigration Policy ensures that Bahamians be considered first for all employable positions, making it hard for ex-Pats to find a steady 9-to-5.
Work permits can range in cost from $250 to $7,500 and it's the employer's responsibility - by law - to sponsor the work permit for non-Bahamian employees.
The Department of Labour provides current and complete statistics on employments in all labour-related activities.
Little Fisherman 06-04-08, - 09:49 PM Have you submitted all documentation for the permitting process?
Lets see, a friend did that back in December, and is still waiting, thats 7 months... go figure, better get on the ball.

By the way , as an Expat, do you ever get Island Fever, since its a small Island and everyone seems to know everyone somehow?

going, omy don't count on being here by october. Unless, the company is a big company like Atlantis who get work permits approved rather quickly. A friend of mines applied for a worker and it took them almost a year just to get an interview. Anyway don't be discouraged every case is different. Also there is no clear cut specified time as to when a work permit would be approved.Things move slowly in the bahamas. But hopefully you may get an employer who can make things go as swiftly as possible.

I was raised in a small cow town, no neighbors to the right, left, in front, and in back. Just the occasional deer, pheasant and cow from over the hill in our yard and fishing in the lake down the road.
Now live out west, no neighbors to the right or left, ocean in front, and lagoon in back and still fishing.
Nothing has changed, just my age
