B.M.G.P:) hiphopanonymous 06-07-08, - 12:45 AM I expected there to be heavy police presence at the beach today after what happened last week.....but can somebody clear this up for me...were the police and/or the security guards preventing all Bahamians from entering the Cabbage beach or were they letting some people enter and not allowing others? There are two entrance points, one by the RIU and one by the eastern end...were both points closed? watsayu 06-07-08, - 01:01 AM but didnt i say that earlier in the thread? I have decided to show my new girlfriend the capital of my island home. I started out in Freeport to show her my old stomping grounds and my own little piece of heaven. Then we came to Nassau. There was an incredible room sale at Atlantis, so we are staying at the Cove. My very good friend lives on PI, so I borrowed his car. We drove down to the Cabbage Beach entrance by the Ocean Club and the po po waved us away. There was the scene that I described. I took a pic of the new sign saying that access could be limited, and if I can find somewhere to download my memory stick, I will post the picture of the access and the chain across the access. We were definitely waved away, in spite of me driving a BMW. In retrospect, the po po could have been waving me away from parking anywhere, but there was a hefty presence at the entrance. The scene was like trying to get into Aura at Atlantis with most of the entrance being blocked except for a small passageway. My girlfriend was turned off at the security, and we didn't try to access the beach. This was rather early in the morning. Instead, we went to Jaws beach and walked around to Flipper Beach, and found a relatively secluded spot. And it was lovely. canewry 06-07-08, - 03:17 AM No. . .dem "back peddled" cos we made noise. . .dem een foolin me round dere. . .they backed off. . . When I went to Both New York/Atlanta recently I decided to stay in one of the "better" hotels... I asked the concierge where should I go and are there places I shouldn't go....He was honest and even made a joke about going to the "bronx" afterhours and how in ATL certain districts I may not want to stop at a red light... But you know what?....Along with that he directed me to historical sites and landmarks...some of which were not in the upscale area of where the hotel was... If you heard him speak you could clearly recognize the pride he had... My point here is...The Guest Service Rep... did a disservice to her country by limiting the touristic experience to that "theme park" called Atlantis... not EVER once mentioning the straw market, or places to go for a REAL "native" experience.... Nassau has a Straw Market? Tourists call it the flea market.......I know we have a flea market. adidasboi987 06-07-08, - 07:09 AM Nassau has a Straw Market? Yeah man!...of course we do.... it just so happens to housed and surrounded by that Canal Street replica...I concede that the straw market has lost its native appeal with the influx of "Louis Vuitton" "Gucci" "Prada" etc...(BTW I waiting on one industrious entrepreneur to bring in some 7 jeans and some True Religion...but dats something different)...there are STILL some vendors who preserve the history of what the market is "supposed to be"...those who are the founders and descendants of the founders still preserve that rich history of plaiting straw and making unique authentic Bahamian souveneirs... But really I don't blame those vendors who sell their knockoff bags... I blame the government who allow them to do so.... the unspoken message is F^%8 culture...so until they seriously find interest in preserving the market for what it was intended to be...and not the trading ground for illegals to sell their designer knockoffs then it will be what it is... That little dissertation and yet still I almost forgot why I really responded...the bit about mentioning the straw market to visitors wasn't the base of my point.... and I do hear your point...but surely there is something more to the Bahamian experience than Atlantis... I'd rather them get hassled to buy the latest Marc Jacobs creation in the market with a CHANCE of seeing and experiencing if they are lucky a part of our culture... than leave here thinking that theme park, Disney world wannabe is all there is to us... Tourists call it the flea market.......I know we have a flea market. |
