Sure wish I was in Nassau this weekend..... cannot wait....
Bahamians flocking to Cabbage Beach yesterday might have been surprised to see scores of police and security officers patrolling the holiday hot spot.

But officials from the Paradise Island Tourism & Development Association (PITDA) said this was just the beginning.

In the wake of the Whit Monday (May 12) stabbing death of 16-year-old Khodee Davis at Cabbage Beach, PITDA has launched Operation Cabbage Beach, an extensive exercise to have security and police officers patrol Paradise Island beaches on all public holidays.

A press statement released by the association said that large crowds of Bahamians make their way through the Atlantis/Kerzner property to participate in and enjoy beach activities, oftentimes causing chaos on the island for both tourists and Bahamians.

"Occasionally crowds of young people roam in large groups acting in a disorderly manner, including fighting and object throwing, creating a dangerous environment for themselves and others," the release said. "This also results in vehicles being parked in no-parking areas or restricted parking areas, causing obstruction to residents, guests and service vehicles."

To tackle this vexing problem, the release said the PITDA has joined forces with the Ministry of National Security, the official opposition and the Royal Bahamas Police Force to put forth a plan of action that they say will help to prevent the problems that often plague the beaches on holidays.

PITDA added that the initiative is intended to: Control vehicular traffic on the streets on Paradise Island on PITDA and Atlantis properties; prevent congestion, parking in no-parking zones and obstruction of guests' and residents' parking; control access ways to the beach which are all properties owned by Atlantis; prevent disorderly groups from roaming the streets and beach; prevent the drinking of alcohol by minors on PITDA and Atlantis property and on the beach; ensure that the playing of music does not cause a nuisance to others; prevent the selling of alcoholic beverages on Atlantis and PITDA property and on the public beach; and generally maintain law and order and maintain a peaceful environment.

To accomplish these goals, PITDA said it plans to establish road access management check points and traffic and parking management positions at Casino Drive, Lakeview Drive and Garden View Drive, establish access management positions at all entrances to Cabbage Beach and post signs at all access points to remind beach-goers that they are on private property and are mandated to follow the rules and regulations.

As Bahamians gathered on Cabbage Beach once again to enjoy the Labor Day holiday yesterday, Officer 1031 Gaitor at the Paradise Island Police Station said his men were fully prepared to deal with any situation that might have erupted.

He confirmed to The Nassau Guardian yesterday that a team of officers had been dispatched to the beach to put PITDA's operational strategy in place.

"That is being done as we speak," Gaitor said. "We have our officers out there and we will be checking people coming onto the beach for weapons and things like that. We will also be dealing with parking issues, the selling of alcoholic beverages and dealing with every single thing that goes on out there."

He said the officers would work closely with the hotels' security officers to rid the island of rowdy revelers.

PITDA said while Davis' death prompted them to launch this initiative, years of disorderly conduct, fighting, object throwing and the creation of a dangerous environment also played a vital role in establishing Operation Cabbage Beach.

Nothing wrong with this now it would be important to go to the beaches out cable beach, Nassau east and west so that all Bahamians are safe and protected... Not bad... not bad...

Public Holiday. Cabbage Beach Closed to Bahamians. Chain across the public access. Pylons preventing people from parking. At the beach access there is a new sign saying that the owner of the beach access has the right to restrict access. There is an umbrella for the 3 security guards, the two police cars, the three policemen and a guy in a suit with a radio.
The sign says that people use the access at the pleasure of the owner, and the pleasure of the owner is enforced by the security guards.
This is how Bahamians gave away their patrimony.

Oh well I guess they are just trying to ensure that what happened on the last holiday doesn't happen again... :cutie:

All beaches should be open to All Bahamians All the Time..PERIOD

Sure, they are now, right? But you might need a boat to get there. And these days, with these long float lines way offshore, you may have to anchour off and swim in. Next, the property owners will be chumming up the waters to make it a dangerous swim...

all the best,

I remember in the mid 80's a beach that you had to pay to go on towards the western end of PI. I think it was called Paradise Beach. After you paid you got a towel and a lounge chair for the day.

It was on the other side of the road that went down to the Holiday Inn on the cove.

all the best,

Once one doesn't go on their property, theres nothing them or the law can do. Dont see any problem with them securing their property, though there should be properly maintained (and secured) public access to nice beaches.

Agreed. The Beach is not owned by anyone (well government, public), should though be maintained by the Government also in the case of public access. Basically, they cant just tell you to leave the beach. On a side note, re the maintaining part, some home owners that live on the edge of a beach maintain it themselves, cleaning up seaweed, cans, etc and other garbage almost on a daily basis, so that could effect the minds of some of them. Also as with anyone's home in Nassau, one will always be weary with strangers that come on or near their property, re crime. But no, they dont own the beach, and unless you are on their property (not the beach) or breaking some law, they should have nothing to say.

white people aren't the only ones running other bahamians off of the public beach ... only time i saw a group being asked to leave was several years back at a swimming area near the current cut. they were blasting a boombox that you could hear clear down to bogue. other bahamians tried in vain to ask them to let down the noise, with no success. so when the police finally came in and literally hauled them away, you could hear high five cheers all over current :cutie:
