View Full Version : DSL Speed

I have had DSL for some time now, and it seems to be getting slower and slower. Batelnet keeps saying that I have the 384/128 account...all speed tests I have run at all times of the day/night are 80-140 download speed, 90-100 upload speed. So whats the deal here? Are they just saying that our connection is 384 but they can't supply the neccessary bandwidth to provide that speed?
I have used cable bahamas and it runs SOOOO fast in comparison. However, I have heard a lot of complaints about them and .. AND ... they dont let you sign up without paying for TV (I use LEGAL directv...just wrong country ;-) . I live in an apartment complex where the cable is already run...all they need to do is activate my internet but I don't think they have the brain capacity to figure this out.
Any ideas about speeding up DSL? Any ideas if they will offer higher, better rate speeds?
Thanks

Its so interesting that so many of us same to have the same problem with the so call providers here in the Bahamas. Do you think its perhaps we have kept quiet for so long on so many issues regarding service, that they really have taken the cry and compliants of the customers and citizens of the Bahamas for granted and virtually said to themselves, "the hell with yall' you all gat' ta' use it anyway, cause you ain't gat no choice and you just ain't gan' ever have none, so suck it up and pay the bills man!

I guess they are saying no matter how much noise we all make, it is what it is. The Executives that run these companies and corporations really don't worry too much, after all they are getting paid handsomely no mater how bad the service is.

We have accepted bad service for so long until its become a part of our culture to accept any sh** . Privitization was the answer and look what we have now. Some folks worrying bout whether after BTC is sold their phones will get turned off for non payment and they can't call someone to turn it on.

MPs worrying about the perks they get now that they don't have to pay phones bills for their cellular or home phones and businesses. Executives and BOARD MEMBERS of the company worried that all the perks of not having to also pay their phones bill would be taken away. Top civil servants who also don't pay their bills, but yet still get the service for free like the others.

Hence the reason for the top civil servants and all who receives perks from BTC, do not want, nor ever supported privitization and the sale of BTC.
PERK CITY would leave them and then they would have to PAY!.... and that just ain't cool !

At least you see the effort of trying; on the part of Cable Bahamas to deliver good service. You said IT!

NOW you see why it won't get any better for the services delivery of DSL or any other service you get in this town. ONly the poor a*** pay for shabby service.

Rory, I don't know much about these things, but a couple months ago my PC was acting up like yours and I did all sorts of things that normally help you to access the net, all to no avail. After calling Cable Bah, they set a time to come and check, but the next day I was up and running without anyone doing any work or repairs to my PC. Same thing happened about 3 times within a couple weeks.

After a while it normalised and worked OK. Then a guy from Cable Bah came with a book checking everyone in the area to see if they were accessing the net OK. I signed off that I was, and explained what had happened. He said that their techs were around here a few days ago and checked the lines on the poles and made some corrections and that the problem should be solved.

So maybe they need to check the cableing by where you live. I always thought that when a modem goes bad, its bad and will not work now and again!

Here was my problem. For over 2 years we had intermittent issues with Coralwave, the US Robotics modem would not range properly.Whether it was hooked up via USB or via the NIC, so we got it tested and they said nothing was wrong with it. Then we got our line tested and got nothing solved. But a few weeks ago, we got a new modem. The tech came to install it and tried to hook it up via the NIC and it didn't work for nothing so the guy left and said it was probably a virus. So i decided to try it via USB and it worked, with no problems since.

The first time we got the service it didn't wanna work and the guy just left and no one at Cable Bahamas called us back. So I ended up getting it to work. Since the dude probably told them we never got it working, they didn't charge us for 3 months straight.

Tell me about it .. the last time (just a couple months ago) my modem went bad .. i just got a second hand one (almost new - was workin fine) from someone who wasnt using it anymore, i took it down to cable, as well, ive never had anyone from cable come here to do anything, I can do it myself ... Anyway, 30 minutes waiting to have someone simply change my mac address, as 3 days spent calling and could not get through ... i just told them I wanted to cancel, as my internet doesnt work .. :-) I was seen straight away ...

i still dont think its the modem this time ..

Rory, maybe you should call and speak to the general manager or whoever is the top man/woman at Cable Bah. Sometimes the lower level guys will give you the runaround. I never had any problems with them -- once they sent two guys who did not seem to know how to correct the problem -- they left and said another tech would come and install an ethernet card and it would cost me $40. Early the next day the tech came and installed the card and it worked! They didn't even charge me.

I am happy to hear its back to normal for you Rory but for some werid reason I've never gotten anywhere near 384 my highest download speed is like 290 something and for some werid reason its near impossible to play any of the recent multiplayer games

Well its back to normal now .. weird .. must have been something in this area ..

He he .. I can install my own card :-)

HA! my mobo came with LAN port built in :) i quickly pointed that out to the tech when i got coralwave about 2 years ago. i made sure he didnt even get to open the seal on that thing, i didn't and still dont have $40 to waste. besides ethernet cards run about $15 standard
