British humanitarian Darren Adler has been accused of defrauding a bank of almost $500,000.

Prosecutors allege that Adler, 40, of Christie Terrace, Lyford Cay, got the money from the Lyford Cay branch of the Royal Bank of Canada in March.

It is alleged that Adler, who works with the HOPE foundation, fraudulently obtained $117,321.20 from the bank on March 19. He allegedly got $126, 048 the following day. Adler is accused of getting $118,291.20 from the bank on March 25, and getting the same amount the next day.

Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez set his bail at $150,000. Adler returns to court today for a status hearing.

In other court news, a magistrate imposed three year-long sentences on two men who had marijuana worth $1.5 million in their vehicle.

Police made the drug bust when they stopped a van on Carmichael Road around 3:30 a.m. on May 22, 2005.

Gary Williams, 35, was driving the vehicle and Chester Johnson, 52, was in the front passenger's seat.

Magistrate Carolita Bethel convicted the men of marijuana possession with intent to supply and conspiracy to possess marijuana with intent to supply yesterday. Both men were told they could appeal the decision.
