A 19-year-old Fox Hill resident is in police custody after reportedly firing shots at police officers Friday morning.
Police Chief Superintendent Hulan Hanna told The Bahama Journal that it was around 3:45am yesterday that officers were dispatched to the Sandilands Village Road area following reports of a break-in at the Down-Home Food store.
Police say while in the area, officers noticed two 1994 Sentras – one gold colored, the other, white. Officers reportedly proceeded to investigate based on reports that one of the vehicles had been stolen.
“While the officers were checking these vehicles, occupants of a blue Chevy Lumina pulled up and officers became suspicious and approached the vehicle,” Chief Superintendent Hanna explained.
“And while doing so, one of the occupants was said to have opened fire. The police officers returned fire and the vehicle sped off. Sometime later, we received information from A&E that a male was brought into the hospital with gunshot injuries to the lower leg. The officers are investigating the incident because we believe that this person may have been the individual involved in the shooting.”
Police investigations were also focused Friday on a drowning at a popular Family Island resort.
Police reports indicated that it was between 8am and 10:45 Thursday morning that 51-year Thomas Torokzei went diving with family members when he apparently drowned.
A resident of Toronto, Canada, Torokzei and his family were guests at the Four Seasons Resort in George Town, Exuma at the time of the incident.
Mr. Torokzei’s body was retrieved from the waters and has since been transported to the capital, where investigations continue and an autopsy will be performed to determine his exact cause of death.
