View Full Version : Park downtown?
LotusPhoenix 06-13-08, - 04:07 PM like these buggas in parliament care about these things...
they ga knock down everything...
the name "Nassau Straw Market" is historical by itself...however, years gone by people have defamed it. Now there is a latent attack on Historic Down Town Nassau.
We need an Authentic Bahamian Craft market. The straw market is a joke now and I for one do not want to pay for it anymore.
And until downtown is maintained, I do not want anymore new bright ideas there either.
Does anyone know why it seems as if there is no rush to rebuild the straw market? After 7 years the vendors are still under that extremely hot tent with no immeadiate solution in sight. The park is a good idea, but a new straw market would even be better.

Bahamians support a STRAW/ NATIVE ART AND CRAFTS MARKET.
What they do not support is a knock off -fleamarket that that circus has become.
I support the hustle,. but put the Flea market vendors elsewhere. Let the native craftperson, painters, woodworkers, semstresses, batikers, photographers, etc have the market.

See everybody taking shots at the "straw" vendors for the knock offs, but you know what, those are the results of the market.
Many vendors dese days cant compete with the pre-made stuff that is sold at wholesale prices by Solomons. If these ladies want to make $$$ and a sale, they have to competitive.
My mummy's family owned a plait shop in LI, but unfortunately, they could never compete with what vendors could by wholesale and pre-assembled in China.
The other side of the FuCCi and LEWIS is that, it sells. Cruise passengers want deals, things they dont have access to. Americans from the Mid-West dont easily access knock-offs, so when they come on a cruise they expect to be able to buy. I blame Panama. Go on a cruise there and go to the market, BETTER DAN CHINATOWN. Simply it's what people want.
Like sunny say, they need a place for artisans and for god sake TAKE DAT TENT DOWN. No wonder people think its a FLEA MARKET.

Cuz, my good mudder is/was a straw vendor. I remember those trips to Miami to buy soveniers. Still, she insisted on sewing her own bags from LI silver top and Andros coconut straw! She did good business in both.
I think we should have a flea market too, just don't try to pass off a horse as a zebra. Put it nearby, but let the market remain pure.
Why let da Panamanians make all da money?
