north eleuthera just lost two of its top bonefishing guides to age-related decline, but do you think many young fishermen are stepping up to the plate?

That's really sad, because N.Eleuthera has a good amount of young fellas that could capitalize on that opportunity if they wanted. :(

I can only speak for black men, or for that experience. I normally deal with black men in my travels in the Bahamas. I don't know what you may be going through, in relation to you beinga prism for white men. The Bahamas is filled- 85% filled- with black men in the men population, in general. I don't see why it would be an issue, for me to indentify with the men of my ethnic background. Take it in the vernacular....unless you want to take offence to me being black and speaking for black experiences?
Are you trying to equate this to racial prejudices, hiphopanonymous?!?!

Oh boy Alien....you like to take things to the extreme.
I'm not trying to equate this to racial prejudices or trap you.
My simple question has been answered by that part of your quote I put in bold.
Have a nice day.

I mean, you sounded as if you wanted to take issue with it. I wasn't trying to offend--just wanted to be clear on that.

yall know this article run me hot right.

first i have a question for the economist on the board.

ok the us and bahamian dollars are said to be on par. everything in the bahamas cost at least 50% more than it does in the usa. typical pay is better in the usa as well so how is it that the usa poverty line is some where around 12,000.00 and the bahamas poverty line is just now being increased to 3,000.00. that doest make sense at all.

next many people just buys their trouble.

Dear Ms. Bowe from the journal article I hope for your sake and the countries sake you go get you self tied off. I dont mean to sound judgmental but for godness sake your oldest child is 18 and your youngest is 1 and your 5 kids is for 3 different men, ALL of home dont take care of their kids.

whats wrong you? i know you love your kids but you shoulda catch some sense from baby number 2 and get tied off.

you shoud be the poster child as to why the bahamas gov needs a serious birth control program (free condoms, cheap to free tube tying, and abortions)

cuase at the end of the day, making a bunch of babies and having them live in substandard conditions coupled with broken home syndrome is any better than carrying the baby full term.

i cant get of the 18 yr old who just had baby and aint working. how u gone be juicin and carryin baby to full term when you dont even have a secure job?

the only smart one is the man who says he doesnt want to go to jail so he doest rob people.

i tell ya plenty a nassuvians messy bad.

Very interesting article. First of all, if you take a look at who poverty is hitting, it is a young man who has been to jail, or an 18 year old girl with a baby, or a cleaning woman.
The very interesting thing (and this is what drives me crazy) that if you are trying to guage the economy, this article gives contradictory statements. Notice that the woman in the article has said that she is getting more jobs now.
These sorts of jobs are bellwethers of the economy. If tings are really really bad, you don't spend the $40 for a housecleaning -- you buy food.
My guess is that there are a few realities out there. The middle class is experiencing shrinkage, but not too much. The rich will always be with you, and buying expensive property, and the marginalised in society will suffer the most with economic downturns.
I get the feeling that although we are in a downturn, it is not that bad. However having tourism is always a risk factor.

but here is the deal lurker.

like i said in my last post. everything in the bahamas cost 2 to 3 times more than in the usa.

the usa poverty lines is about 12k the bahamas is 3k.

3k is like dirt poor and way tooooooo low in my estimantion cuase think of it, what can you buy with 3k? who makes 3k? the only people who i know make 3k per year is summer school students.

real poor working people make 10-15 k

what i am trying to say is where are all those other people who fall with in the 3-15 k catagory? how many bahamians fall in that catagory?

if 9% of the population make 3k and consider poor image the amount that make under 15k.

also the people spending 40 bucks to get their house clean aint bahamians buddy.

thats white forign expats all the way. i am not saying no bahamians do it but, they make up less than 5% of the people that do do it

A good way to beat poverty is to not have more mouths than you can afford to feed. Kids are expensive, and it seems not too many people have figured it out yet. If you are making $40 a day cleaning peoples houses, its much cheaper to remain childless, until your financial situation improves greatly.

They know what causes that now! Lol! :) But I guess some folks don't.
