NARANJA, Fla. - "Authorities continue to investigate what caused Miami-Dade police to shoot and kill a man who was attending a friend's funeral in Naranja, south of Miami.

An unidentified officer shot and killed 22-year-old Gregorio Manriquez on Saturday after he walked from the grave site to the parking lot.

Manriquez was at the cemetery to attend a funeral for a 17-year-old friend who had been killed in a car accident. Police have released little information about the shooting but say Manriquez was seen firing a gun at a green vehicle that drove by the cemetery. Police say officers told Manriquez several times to put the gun down, but he refused.

Witnesses, on the other hand, say Manriquez was firing shots to honor his friend and did put the gun down."

We see this becoming more and more common here at home. Obviously a fad originating from the 21 gun salute given to fallen military service men and women. No doubt our society is mirroring the behaviour that is adopted by the thugs and gangstas glorified in American hip hop culture. What can be done to overcome this bastardization of our country's culture that replaces the solemnity that we once had for the dead, with the violent and crass behaviour that is becoming the norm following the deaths of young Bahamians?
