Police find skull, possibly from headless body

Police divers have fished a skull out of the waters near the South Beach Canal, Chief Superintendent Glen Miller reported.

It is believed to be that of the badly-decomposed headless body discovered over the weekend.

"We sent a team of divers down to the area where the body was found and we found a skull. The fact that the body was in such a bad state of decomposition, we suspect that the skull was the head of that body but we have to conduct further investigations before we can say that positively," said Miller.

Chief Superintendent Miller said the discovery was made on Sunday morning.

Meantime, he reported that police still did not know the identity of the person or the cause of death, as the autopsy was not yet complete.

The body, which was discovered over the weekend floating in waters off South Beach, was spotted by a member of the public on Saturday evening, near the South Beach Canal.

"Someone went to do some checks of a property and discovered the body," said Chief Superintendent Miller.

A team from the Carmichael Road Detective Unit was dispatched to the area where officers found the remains of the male.

Police were unable to determine the victim's age due to the body's advanced state of decomposition. However, he was reportedly fully clad and wearing tennis shoes at the time authorities found him.

"We don't know if (his head 'falling' off) was the result of being in the water for a long period of time or not," he said.

"The autopsy will be able to tell us more in respect to that. We certainly will commence an intense inquiry."

Miller made an appeal to the public to come forward with any information on the victim.

"Anyone out there with a missing male relative or friend, who has been missing within a month's period, should come forward to the police," he said.

"Perhaps they can identify him by looking at his clothing. That is the only form of identification that we have so far. We certainly will do further checks of the body to see if there is any other type of identification. We will let the public know that as soon as we find out."
