Staff of the Willamae Pratt home for Girls are claiming on Z.N.S that on Saturday, some of the girls apparently destroyed a section of the home and and property including new beds, toilets then barricaded themselves in room.

The staff claimed that Police had to be called in to break down the door to remove the girls

Staff said unrest has been brewing for the past two weeks and they have had enough.

The Minister said that there was an incident on Saturday and Police had to be called in. The Minister said that the Ministry will now be looking into the quaifications of the employees in the centre to bring some resolution to the situation.

She also said that it is not unusal for Police to be called to deal with situations at both instituitions.

One thing that is so desperately needed in this country is a complete overhaul of the Juvenile Justice System and some serious changes to the Young Persons and Children's Act.

I had the opportunity to do a course in Juvenile Delinquency and the system that the Bahamas has in place leaves much to be desired.

The Minister is so right about employees at that centre, the ads that I usually see in the papers looking for workers at the homes, only ask for 5 BJC.

The majority of the workers there knows zilch about Juvenile Delinquency and rehabilitation. They are merely baby sitters for Sr. Chuckies plain and simple.

It is time we start charging some of them as adults and put their rude behind in Fox Hill. In many instances some of the offender's in that home are only hindering the possible rehabilitaion of other offenders with minor infractions.

There must be a change!

The Staff members says that they have been trained by the Police in self defense but are not allowed to touch the girls.I do not think they want to touch those girls. If those girls are as bad as the workers claim to be, I would not want to touch them either.

My advice to those ladies, some of whom look to be middle aged, is to ask for a transfer someplace where you won't have to fight for your life.

When applying for jobs such as these, KNOW THE RISKS. You are applying to work with strong, energetic, strapping young girls who have behavioral problems, they are already locked down and some have nothing left to lose.

What do you expect!!

When you let a bad kids know that violence against them is “off the table” you open it up for them to do as they wish.
