After seeing all this garbage, I remember what a drunk woman once said to my grammy when she was asked, why does she hang out in the graveyard.
She said "das the best place ta drink ya rum and eat ya food, ain nobody ger beg ya fer non and I does get my peace and quiet.Hence the PILLOW!

i was just about to say looks like you have some homeless ppl living there.

Just a thought...perhaps schools should make community service , like the cleaning up of parks and historical sites a part of the cirriculum. Maybe as a part of the history or civics program and then the youth would understand the importance and be motivated to keep them clean.

I am of the opinion that when people feel a part of the process, they take ownership nd pride in the projects they undertake.

Maybe the new generation will understand the importance of preserving our heritage and the fact that we have limited resources and are competing globally in tourism and keep our country clean.

All government senior high schools have a community service component as part of graduation criteria (or at least they are supposed to) As both this burial ground and the Farrington park are downtown they would be good places for CR Walker students to work.

Anyone know anybody on the staff at CR Walker to make the suggestion to?

Hiphop, that tree is a Banyan tree, some years ago my Company was contracted to remove some dead trees and trim some Palms that was a bother to the contractor repairing the wall.

At that time The Bahamas Historical Socity was taking care of grounds, it was kept much better then.

I really wanted to take care of that tree, still do, but.................................

I think this is a great idea.....just call the school and ask for a member of the Guidance Department who heads the community service program at that school.....they in turn SHOULD bring it to the attention of administrators and the principal. Hopefully it would be agreed to because I think it's a great idea.

If I had to money I would do myself, and since I dont have the money I thought on how I could help.

I do my share of charity work when I can, but remember my business is not main stream, we are in the conservation side of things, and sweet Lord knows the money is on the side of destruction ie: take down/remove!

So I started an Adopt A Tree Program in 2005 Since that time only the Nassau Garden Club has come on board. We repaired the SandBox trees on Church St. thats the road from Shirley St. to New Bridge.

What I thought was we need to take care of our old trees, Historical trees like the Banyan on these grounds.

My company would repair/trim trees at cost, after all, my willingness cant pay the men, my team how ever from time to time will invest their labour FREE of charge to help out.But these men have obligations like every one else and I cannot expect trained professionals to work for free.

And I cannot expect to stay in business with out profit, my profit margin as it stands now is very low.

So how to balance passion and love for country with business?? We ALL can do our part. I cannot on a sustained basis offer my services for cost, but surely I can give some days out of month to do so.

So why dont we put our money where I mouth is?? Let BI or some of us on BI adopt some public spaces?

We all can work for free picking up garbage, some who cannot come to help donate what you can to haul away garbage, I will donate trucks.

Also donate to take care of trees..................

What I am trying to say is let us put up, or shut up, its that simple! A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step, lets get in gear.

udder wise den dat, doon bodder me!

We are now talking about doing something about it, can we count on any of you to help clean this and other areas up.

I realize not every one is able to come out, but how about donations?

We can line up volunteers, indentify the cost involved such as hauling away debris, or maybe pile up for Ministry of works to haul away, but that has its own issues.

The important thing is to start....................................
