Just let me know when. I'll see if I can bring some friends. hiphopanonymous 06-19-08, - 02:51 PM I contacted the office of MP Charles Maynard, as he as the minister of state for Culture.....I gave them the BI address so they could see the pictures and his secretary assured me she'd pass the information on to him. Thanks to androsann for showing me this website: http://www.bahamas.gov.bs/bahamasweb...on=1#_Section1 Which shows the two parks are under the Culture ministry. These historical sites our a part of our history and culture...they should be maintained better. If you wish to call the Hon Charles Maynard his office number is 502-2700 I called Environmental Health and they assured me they would come and pick up the garbage from both sites. (Which is the same thing they said to me when I called last summer, in Decemeber, and again in March). I called ministry of works but they said it wasn't their responsibility. concerned 06-19-08, - 08:48 PM So when? What time? Come on yall let's start. Meet, clean up and decide where we go from there. Meet, clean up and decide where we go from there. Do I need to sweeten the pot? Case of beer? Tonymontana you need some Bamboo Shack to get here? I guess we just need an organizer...... Um....but in the mean time....calls to the government I think could help. Concerned, if you have time, departments and people to call are: -Charles Maynard, minister of state for culture...because these are cultural sites that need to be maintained better (they'll say its not there responsibility to clean but they could get government agencies responsible to clean if they wanted to).....502-2700 -Department of Environmental Health, to pick up the garbage....322-8037 -Frank Smith, the MP of St. Thomas More where Farrington Park is located in...393-8818 -Loretta Butler Turner, MP of Montagu where the eastern parade burial ground is located in....393-0878 or 393-0879 -The Ministry of Works 322-4830 because according to the government website they are responsible for cemeteries http://www.bahamas.gov.bs/bahamasweb2/home.nsf/Agencies/Public%20Works%20and%20Transport,%20Ministry%20of -Also the minister of state for public utilities the Hon. Earl Eaveaux MP 302-9745 CG 06-20-08, - 09:50 AM Notice the end of the plague reads: "Maintienance of this area symbolises the abiding concern of the Bahamas Government in preserving historic sites." Ironic! hiphopanonymous 06-20-08, - 09:58 AM Ironic! I was hoping the media would pick up on that....it would be interesting to see that picture then a picture of the burial grounds covered in trash in a daily paper.....that might motivate the government. It is a shame that this is the way we remember our dead. As I recall the people buried there died in the great Yellow Fever epidemic. hiphopanonymous 06-20-08, - 10:41 AM It is a shame that this is the way we remember our dead. CG 06-20-08, - 10:57 AM Interesting, I didn't know those were the bodies of people who died in the yellow fever epidemic...... It is a shame... That is my understanding. I was also told they were buried outside the church yard so as not to “infect” the people buried therein. (Strange what we used to believe.) :) Does anyone know if this is true? I am always interested in updating my Bahamian history. bahama_rudest 06-20-08, - 11:30 AM Just a thought...perhaps schools should make community service , like the cleaning up of parks and historical sites a part of the cirriculum. Maybe as a part of the history or civics program and then the youth would understand the importance and be motivated to keep them clean. I am of the opinion that when people feel a part of the process, they take ownership nd pride in the projects they undertake. Maybe the new generation will understand the importance of preserving our heritage and the fact that we have limited resources and are competing globally in tourism and keep our country clean. dat thought crossed my mind also. we hav many coperate companies that adopt skools. so in return why not hav skools adopt a park. each school could adopt a park or beach and on saturdays those students that are really concerned and care bout the environment can volunteer to clean it up. they can place place a sign up stating they adopted that area and shows pride. i see similar things being done with roudabouts which are being adopted by banks n such. would be a great program and shouldnt cost much. transportation, garbage bags and lunch for the volunteers. its time we take pride in our country CG 06-20-08, - 11:48 AM dat thought crossed my mind also. we hav many coperate companies that adopt skools. so in return why not hav skools adopt a park. each school could adopt a park or beach and on saturdays those students that are really concerned and care bout the environment can volunteer to clean it up. they can place place a sign up stating they adopted that area and shows pride. i see similar things being done with roudabouts which are being adopted by banks n such. would be a great program and shouldnt cost much. transportation, garbage bags and lunch for the volunteers. its time we take pride in our country I understand what you mean about companies adopting green areas but I think government has people to keep these places clean, if not they should. These places are part of our quality of life, many are places of interest to visitors. They are too important to be left to “charity.” We don’t have that many place to keep clean. Many are not that big - a guy with a rake and a plastic bag could keep them up to scratch. hiphopanonymous 06-20-08, - 12:50 PM I understand what you mean about companies adopting green areas but I think government has people to keep these places clean, if not they should. There are civil servants and MP's who are being paid to do this....but they are not doing it.... So if we as private citizens have to do what the government is supposed to do.....then they need to stop charging property tax, business licence fee, etc.....because we are not getting the services we are paying for. hiphopanonymous 06-20-08, - 12:53 PM If anyone else is interested in calling or contacting the government to help get this situation resolved you could also call: The Ministry of Works 322-4830 because according to the government website they are responsible for cemeteries http://www.bahamas.gov.bs/bahamasweb2/home.nsf/Agencies/Public%20Works%20and%20Transport,%20Ministry%20of Also the minister of state for public utilities the Hon. You write well. Why not do a story, with the pictures and send it in? There are three big papers, one will run with it I am sure. |
