View Full Version : Burial Grounds...fix this too...
hiphopanonymous 06-18-08, - 08:20 PM The Centre Burial Grounds is located at the eastern end of the eastern parade.
It is disgracefull how disgusting this historic site is today. The government should be ashamed.

Notice the end of the plague reads: "Maintienance of this area symbolises the abiding concern of the Bahamas Government in preserving historic sites."

hiphopanonymous 06-18-08, - 08:25 PM I'm still a bit hazy on which minister is in charge of parks....but I think since this is a piece of our culture it might fall under Charles Maynard......
Also, this historic site is located in the Montagu constituency....so that's Loretta Butler Turner's turf.
I hadn't been there in many years so I didn't know it looked so bad.
androsann 06-18-08, - 08:27 PM This looks disgusting. Not to change the topic though but does anyone know how come there were 3 burial grounds attached to St. Matthew's? If this is the Centre Burial Ground, which I have visited in the past, does the northern one still exist?
Also wouldn't they still be considered to be a part of St Matthew's?
bahamiangoddess 06-18-08, - 08:28 PM After seeing all this garbage, I remember what a drunk woman once said to my grammy when she was asked, why does she hang out in the graveyard.
She said "das the best place ta drink ya rum and eat ya food, ain nobody ger beg ya fer non and I does get my peace and quiet.Hence the PILLOW!

I agree....nasty people will always litter.
But the government should take better measures to protect this historic site.
A clean up crew should stop by at least once a week.....
The big question to me is obviously this historic site is not being maintained...it is not being cleaned....who is accountable? Which civil servants have failed to do the jobs they are paid to do?
androsann 06-18-08, - 08:29 PM Doesn't monuments and antiquities come under the Ministry of Education?

I guess there were three because the church has been around for so long. As the oldest church in Nassau there must be a lot of dead bodies and the church probably needed a lot of room.
I believe it is a part of St. Matthews but because it was designated a historical site....the government agreed to help maintain and preserve it (which they have failed to do so).

OK parks definitely come under Cultural Affairs so Charles Maynard is the man to see about the park in your other thread

I asked because traditionally in the Anglican church certain types of dead bodies had to be buried outside of the churches walls and this graveyard is quite a way from the current church wall. It is possible though that originally the church owned all the property to the water front (it may still do).
