Da Clique 06-18-08, - 10:28 PM Most bay street store owners and merchants don’t want the downtown atmosphere to be convoluted with ill mannered and unsophisticated riff raffs posing as vendors.
According to some; this will only confuse visiting customers completely and, if not properly regulated, bring about the imitate downfall to what is left of our touristic market…so they say.

So building a green space on the original straw market site makes sense to you ...so where do you suggest the straw vendors go...stay in the hot tent?? where and what are these people suppose to do?

Protest, form organized marches and sit outs, lobby parliament, apply for government backed grants, rent regular store fronts and the list goes on...
I am not saying that it will be easy but this is what everyone else in the world does in similar circumstances.

Then they need to regulate it. I remember some years ago the straw vendors were sent to Bahamahost. If they can regulate the hair braiders, my goodness I am sure they can do something with the vendors. That tent is extemely hot but vendors have to put up with it.They may not be sophisticated butthey are Bahamians.I went there to buy a shirt for a friend, I could not stay there more than 15 minutes. How are the tourists supposed to enjoy their shopping experience there?Somebody somewhere need to catch some sense man.THis has been going on for far too long:sparky:

Necessity is the mother of invention…that is to say; there must be, at least, one straw vendor with a mutually beneficial idea that could save the day. Find that person instead of waiting for the government to make the first moves before it’s too late.
bahama_rudest 06-18-08, - 11:09 PM if the government rebuilds the straw market, would the vendors pay their rent on time? n if so would they pay wat the average downtown rent is? n wat about the national insurance they aint payin. to add to that, what happens when they are delinquent n the government does wat any businessman would do and kick them out...nxt ting ya hear dem cryin victimization and dey ain want da poor man make no money. if da market is to be rebuilt in the former location (with a portion of my hard earn tax money) i wanna make sure that the rent and all other things such as licenses, national insurance and everyting is paid and paid on time. we have to be reminded that those same bahamians are receiving prime land with rent as low as wat you would pay in the mudd or pigeon pea. we need to stop giving bahamians freebies and make them appreciate what they have and stop with their lousy service, not paying rent and bills on time, and hiring illegals so they could pay lower wages. those straw vendors are some of the richest people in this country and yet we jump to their aid wheneva they cant get their freebies as they are used to

EbonyApollo 06-19-08, - 01:34 AM I miss Alien too but the fact remains, I think the greenspace is a good idea actually. It isnt enough that the straw market exist it has to be worthy of its existence.

sound like you promoting the complete removal of the straw market concept...
EbonyApollo 06-19-08, - 02:24 AM If it serves a useful purpose then restore its former position, but if it has no useful purpose then let it remain where it is or allow it to find a new location. I just think the idea needs to be re-worked. We have a recession going on, this is no time to be spending money extravagantly where we cannot foresee any kind of satisfaction or return on our investment.

as far as i no, da straw market was like an historic landmark to some ppl and plenty tourist, i see no reason to take dat away from ppl, if it didnt hav so much useful purpose, why do so much tourist come here just to go to da straw market?
