Male prostitution in the capital
By JASMIN BONIMY, Guardian Staff Reporter, jasmin@nasguard.com

One of the capital's northern shorelines has been transformed into a hotspot for homosexual prostitution, a law enforcement official revealed yesterday.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Oscar Sands, told The Guardian yesterday that Long Warf Beach has been the base of operation for homosexual prostitution.

The police officer confirmed that male prostitutes are selling sexual favors for money and not just 'cruising' for sex.

The officer in charge of the Fort Charlotte Police Station, which sits just opposite the seashore, told our news team: "Guys are sleeping on the beach. We have guys now who are male prostitutes that solicit homosexuals."

ASP Sands said local men that sell their bodies for profit usually operate at Long Warf Beach during the early morning hours, sometime between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m.

The police official added that while both local and foreign 'johns' are targeted by the male prostitutes, the focus is primarily placed on visitors.

"It doesn't matter who it is, they target men who are on the beach," admitted ASP Sands. "They select mostly tourists, but there are a few natives who hang out there also. We've had a number of complaints from person coming in here that men have approached them on the beach."

Still, ASP Sands, who was assigned to the Fort Charlotte Station just three months ago, insisted that his station has clamped down on the problem.

"It's gotten better now because they are no longer hiding on the beach waiting, because we have been weeding them out," he said. "The area here needs to be cleaned up, every fathom of the beach."

Meanwhile, Officer Sands' revelation comes just days after he led a joint Police and Immigration operation that netted eight migrant prostitutes at the former Mayfield Hotel.

Five Jamaicans and three Haitian nationals were taken into custody, after it was discovered they were allegedly employees of a brothel, which operated just 20 feet away from the Fort Charlotte Police Station. Police say they believe four of the prostitutes were not caught during Monday's exercise.

Business owners in the area commented on Monday's raid. Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one said, "I am happy they were able to remove the prostitution ring, but there are still some injustices that they need to work on."

Others insisted that they believed Police officials only slowed down operations within the prostitution ring.

"The girls just go and come so they know what they're doing," said another business owner that did not want to be identified. "They also bring in new girls every six or seven months. Right now, the girls they didn't catch [are] driving around in an SD car and prostituting somewhere else on the island."

When The Guardian visited the scene yesterday, a chain link fence blocked off the entrance as the upstairs portion of the former hotel seemed to be vacant. As of yesterday, three of the eight alleged prostitutes were repatriated according to Immigration officials.

memba dis is ONLY happen in certain circles, I think the reference was "their circles." BOL

On another note, I am tired of the guardian getting their piece from this site. I mean it was a couple weeks ago that "Bahamian Sigmund Freud" broke down the whole long wharf scenario on the fourm and no look, article.

How about really breaking a story on their own?

You can say that again

Can you imagine being thrown out of your home at (lets say) 14 with only the cloths on your back cause you are Trans or gay. What do you do to eat the next day? What do you do for shelter?
The star8s don’t care because you are trans or gay and the predators are waiting. Offering money a place to stay (for a while anyway). Then drugs become a welcome diversion and you know they will destroy your life but they take away the pain of rejection and of having to do unspeakable things at 14 when you should be home doing homework. You don't care because now your life has no future except what will you do to eat tomorrow. Soon disease catch up to you because you did not really understand what safe sex is. You did not understand you can even get sick just from kissing or sharing a needle. (I am not just talking about HIV)
No one in the GLBT community was out there as a role model none told you to stick it out do what you have to do to stay at home and get an education you don't have to have sex now wait, you don't have to transition now even though the anguish and depression is almost unbearable. Find private moments to let you be you but stick it out get a good education.
Don't go to the “all you can drink parties” they destroy our youth.
To GLBT youth get your independence then move on to living free.

You really broke that down Miss Thing. And, so many people just see the prostitution in this, without really examining what has driven these young men and women to this. In some cases, of course they are those who are simply using prostitution as a way to furnish their wardrobes. But, for others this is a means of survival in a society that has really shunned them and left them behind. When your tired of being bullied and called a faggot at school, your parents want nothing to do with you, and their is little support out there to be found sometimes hustling seems to be the only answer...

Now why would anyone choose to be gay, especially in the Bahamas or anywhere else for that matter, and make life all the more difficult for themselves? I know I sure as hell didn't...

thats the whole point too many people failed to understand especially in caribbean communities NO BODY CHOOSES THEIR SEXUALITY.

YES NATURE INTENDED A PENIS FOR A VAGINA AND BECUASE OF THIS MOST PEOPLE ARE STRAIGHT.

people need to understand that sometimes nature goofs up, i just saw on tv last night a indian girl was born with 4 arms and 4 legs. nature goofs sometimes.

instead of understanding and caring for these people and treating them with respect soeciety shuns them.
