I don't discount the messages in some of the bible stories but you have to plough through so much shti to find the pearls of wisdom
I see what you are saying but it is important to be able to distinguish between a pearl and the other stuff you mentioned! Lol!
..it is not even worth the effort.
Pearls are always worth the effort. :)

Even when you can find them in great abundance in more palatable sources?
The million dollar question is; what parts, inquiring minds would like to know.
Holy Books are part history, part stories (fanciful if you like) and part a book that explains the beliefs of that particular religion.
In the Bible, stories Jesus told and stories about him, are stories that have a message. The stories about the Buddha too. I guess you want an example?
A woman came to the Buddha and asked if he could bring her son back to life. To make a long story short he said he could but he would require a pinch of mustard seed from a house that had never tasted death. She could not find such a household. It was then she learned that death was something not strange but common to all. She resigned herself to her son’s death.
As for Jesus! "That's why I'm telling you to stop worrying about your life-what you will eat or what you will drink-or about your body-what you will wear. Life is more than food, isn't it, and the body more than clothing?..........
Even when you can find them in great abundance in more palatable sources?
Yes.:) The best pearls are seldom in abundance.
grouper2 06-20-08, - 03:31 PM Living, indeed, has became such a trivial pursuit for many wherein, for whatever reason, the choice to live is a more hideous thought that the realism of death.

Im sorry to read this.
I can only imagine what was going through his head at the time.
At times I do feel down and out but not to the point where I want to kill myself.
If he had only had someone to talk to, he probally did this to cause his former GF pain but sometimes its the total opposite.
Rest in PEACE (If you can)
licks2 06-20-08, - 04:20 PM Lucifer is sounding more and more like a bible-toting christian.
*smirks*
Anywho...
The man killed himself, there is no hell, and there is no mortal "sin" that a human can do in this finite lifetime that is so horrible that it deserves an eternity of punishment.
Rational minds would be aware of such, but in the minds of SOME the filter of religion seemingly tends to trap and nullify intelligence, leaving folly and superstition in its place.
DAMN BOUY!!! HA YOU KNOW DEM TINGS AYE? AND IN DA MIND OF SOME 'INTELLIGENCE" TEND TA NULLIFY "COMMON LOGICAL" THINKING!!!!!!
EVERYBODY KNOW I EEN KNOW "BIBLE THUMPING" PERSON. . .BUT DAYUM BOUY. . .DEM SOME BIG STATEMENTS TA MAKE NAH!!:hammer:

Think on humanity and the reasons why religion has existed from since humans figured out that communication is possible with each other...
The end result of your analysis most likely will reflect that humans are a species who have socialized themselves over thousands of years using fear of punishment as a controlling factor. Religion often exemplifies this fact.
A superior force/being/<whatever it is> that is omniscient and omnipotent would be absolutely cruel to create an entity whose lifetime spans less than 125 years and then punish it for the rest of eternity for the frivolous decisions that the omnipotent being itself has given that entity the power to exert.
The claim that eternal punishment and damnation is the end result of a mere free choice is an utterly ridiculous concept. According to some opinions, even if a person lives a perfectly trouble-free life, they are still going to "hell" if they have not accepted certain parameters. Come on now. Let's be serious here. This IS the 21 century. We should know better.
The concept of judgment day in Revelations is messed up as well. Why would all humans at the "end of time" need to be judged and stand before an omniscient being that already would be fully aware of what every human has done. What is that? Divine court or something? Will we have a lawyer? Or a devil's advocate perhaps?
Religion is nothing but man-made concepts with universally metaphysical moral roots that are meant to guide us properly through this life. Roots that will not result in an eternal punishment outside of this existence as the insignificant roles humans play on this teeny tiny planet are too irrelevant to the overall continuation of this universe to be worthy of otherwise.

It can't be that bad for one to want to take their life!
at least he did not take out the entire family before he went...
