A three-year-prison term was slapped on a 24-year-old man last week, after he admitted to a charge of stealing.

Milton Dames appeared before Magistrate Derence Rolle. He pleaded guilty to stealing a $30 wallet and $200 on Wednesday from a woman as she walked through Elizabeth Avenue.

Dames told the court he committed the offense because he was unable to find a job and his baby needed milk and pampers.

"I tried to find work but nobody would hire me," he said.

According to court dockets, the woman was walking through Elizabeth Avenue when Dames grabbed her pouch and ran. The victim and others gave chase and were able to capture him and hold onto him until police arrived on the scene.

"I'm sorry for taking her purse. I gave her back her things. I did not pull no knife or no gun on her. This is the first time I ever do this in my life. I don't know what got into my head," Dames said.

When asked by Magistrate Rolle if he knew right from wrong, Dames replied 'yes.'

"Stealing is a serious offense," Magistrate Rolle pointed out. He therefore sentenced Dames to three years in prison and informed him that he had a right to appeal the decision in the Supreme Court.

In other court news, 33-year-old Tina Allen was arraigned on a charge of causing harm.

It is alleged that the Sumner Street resident caused harm to Leona Hepburn on Thursday.

Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Brennen told the court that Allen threw acid on Hepburn, causing injuries to her arm and leg.

Allen, a Haitian national who claimed to be married to a Bahamian man, was remanded to custody by Magistrate Rolle until Wednesday, June 25, for a bail hearing, at which time she is also to present information on her status in the country.

For stealing $230 dollars a guy is going to jail for three years........

The problem I predict is when he gets out he will have no new skills and have to go back to stealing again.

The government needs to fix up Fox Hill prison and get some better rehabilitation programmes going.

this is a case where i believe rehabilitation works and should be avilable for this man and people like him.

sentencing him to three years wasnt a good move especially if they dont teACH HIM HOW TO LAy tile or something while he is in there.

the only reason why the lady got the stuff back is becuase they cuaght him.

i wish theives would return ur stuff though. u know like if they break open ur house bring back all the items that have no value to them just rest it on ur door while u goone?

ahhhhh well such is life
