Opposition leader and former prime minister Perry Christie on Monday decried conditions at the downtown straw market, accusing the government of allowing the market to become a "national disgrace".
Mr. Christie – who was accompanied by several opposition parliamentarians on a tour of the market – said his government left solid plans in place for a new straw market.
"My government announced a new contract for a newly designed straw market which would be in the midst of a plaza," Mr. Christie said.
"This was not only designed and participated [in] by the business community on Bay Street, but also by hundreds of other stakeholders [who] include hoteliers. The idea was for the new straw market to be the catalyst for the redevelopment of Nassau which includes Bay Street."....".....

You gatts ta be kiddin, een no construction started under the PLP or da FNM. Worst of all, I sure dont want my forced tax payin money ta build anudder dirty rat infested "FLEA MARKET" because they stopped selling straw in there from the 1980's. Plus dey wanted ta build a bar on da turd floor so when ya get drunk ya could fall down da steps and anudder restaurant ta take more business from the already existing ones who suffering, wow thats makes plenty sense:realmad:
Personally, apart from the run down buildings, the "FLEA MARKET" should be moved from downtown to Arawak Cay and more importantly, the culprits who continue to flaunt the knock offs infront of not only the "FLEA MARKET" but the police should be arrested and shut down like how the chinese knock off Gucci Hand Bag shop was shut down a few months ago.
Why dont they put their money together and build their own "Flea Market" and pay for Janitorial Services because when I was in their last week, the stench from the garbage was mind boggling and the heat juss makin it worse. Move da Flea Market to Arawak Cay and away from Downtown FNM Govt, and da container port too, to much eye sores, garbage, traffic. Leave Downtown for business (Banks, Clothing, Jewelry) and restaurants only and make it like a smaller version of South Beach Mia, oh, and move da Courts too, da A/C's een work properly/consistently since 1973 and da roof/floor caving in, move dem by da prison and away from downtown so that ya een have ta waste gas in dem Gas Guzzlin Bus putting on a show fa dese idjit Satanic Criminal Worshippers like da buey da udder day who had a welcoming party by some of the more ijit Bahamians who een know what da hell dey was teenkin:realmad::sparky::realmad::sparky::tdown:

chancellor 06-24-08, - 01:30 PM Christie........SHUT UP!!!!
legalalien 06-24-08, - 01:32 PM i am strongly opposed to the government using tax payers money to build a straw market.
by all indications, their record of statutory payments is ridiulous, their stewardship of their place of work is disgraceful, they offer precious little bahamian goods to visitors.
if as windbag paul moss asserts there are many bahamians who wold be willing to buy the land where the previous market was located, why cant they buy land elsewhere and build their own market?
as for the stupid assertion that tourists come here just for the market, GET A LIFE!!!!
tonymontana 06-24-08, - 01:45 PM so what do they come for , is it our great hospitality, i dont think so we stopped smiling and giving good service since the 80s.
is it our great food outside of the bambooshack there are hardly any authentic bahamain restaurants
or is it our wonderful historical sights, like the pissy fourts or are historical rundown land marks.
i say no to all annum.
'the ppl who come here come to see our local straw vendors selling genuine imported goods from all over the world, they love when the strawvendors cuss at them when they refuse to bye there goods it reminds them of home plus they like to see when the vendors fihght over them it makes them feel specail.
i say give the straw vendors there own place free of charge so that the tourist can come and see genuine imported goods from all over the world, it will be like visiting the world but you are in the bahamas.
i like that idea i support Mr chrisite and alunum who support this move :bouncy::bouncy:

speakin of hospitality, a young spanish man on a skooter and asked for directions to c.o.b. as i was tryin 2 direct him he asked wat is wrong wit our bahamian woman. say dey too rude. i assumed he tried 2 get sum but was rejected. till he say him n his wife went in da straw market earlier just yesterday and the women in their insulted them because they refused to purchase from their stall. i was to ashamed and simply to pay no attention it probably the heat and wished him well on the rest of his trip here. dis is wat christie wan spend my money to buid them an expensive building for? to make us even look worse?
i challenge any bi member to dress like a tourist and walk through the market and c wat tru quality customer service is. you sure wouldnt find it dere. christie jus wan look like a hero for the poor. and them vendors ain poor at all. i encourage the gov to create da green space wit haste n keep da hooligans n drunkards away while dey at it
canesfins 06-24-08, - 02:42 PM But you are in favor of spending your tax dollars to build a park in the middle of town instead of using that prime property for other profit seeking ventures?

With all the empty store fronts on Bay St., I'm sure there is space available for businesses. Greenspace may encourage more people to use Bay St. and can generate some business for downtown.
