Suspected prostitute jailed for one week
By BIANCA SYMONETTE, Guardian Staff Reporter, bianca@nasguard.com
An alleged prostitute who was charged with loitering was yesterday sentenced to one week in Her Majesty's Prison after pleading guilty to the charge.
Sherry Sweeting, 32, of Augusta Street, was remanded to prison last Friday after using explicit language in the magistrate's court.
At her arraignment last week, Sweeting was led to court wearing a large black garbage bag to conceal the skimpy outfit she was arrested in; however, when she appeared in court yesterday Sweeting was wearing a pair of Capri pants, a black top and black boots.
Sweeting pleaded guilty before Chief Magistrate Roger Gomez to loitering on Bay Street on June 18, in the area of the Harbour Moon Restaurant.
On Friday she had told the court that she was standing near Harbour Moon, waiting for a ride to take her to a nightclub when she was approached by police officers who allegedly told her — using an expletive — to move away from the corner.
Sweeting told Magistrate Gomez that after the officers made the comment, she responded by telling the officers that "(expletive) was made to sell."
At her sentencing, Magistrate Gomez told Sweeting that she insulted the court by using that language and suggested that she apologize for her actions.
Sweeting apologized but said that she was only explaining what had transpired leading up to her arrest.
In other news from the courts, a man who pleaded guilty to possession of a forged document will have to wait until July 1 to learn of his punishment.
On June 21, Rhajesh Coleby, 21, of Soursop Street, had a forged Royal Bahamas Police Force Criminal Records Office certificate in his name. He was also charged with uttering a forged document on the same date.
And a 29-year-old woman was granted bail yesterday after pleading not guilty to possession of dangerous drugs.
It is alleged that Chequita Williams of Cowpen Road, was found with a quantity of marijuana on Monday, June 23.
Magistrate Carolita Bethel granted Williams $5,000 bail with one or two sureties. A trial date was set for January 22, 2009.
