Why would PLPs see that as a victory?
canesfins 06-26-08, - 11:09 AM Why would PLPs see that as a victory?
Well because its the oppositions job to ensure that the proper procedures and proper democracy is followed. Clearly in this case it was not followed, therefore the opposition succeeded in what it is there for. This is one of the few instances in which the opposition actually did what the opposition is supposed to do. The present government shoudl be ashamed of the way they handled these local elections, it was deplorable.

There are thousands of dollars in Local Government contracts and jobs. Even they do not get a regular salary, people like power.
In 99.9% of the districts people vote along party lines.
The P.L.P would see it as a victory because if they control the Council, they will control the flow of money and contracts on that particular island.
The Council is like a mini Government itself.

Goddess you is right it is a mini government in itself. What will happen is the councils will victimize those who voted for the government and only the plp ones will get something. wasn't local government post to be neutral and not political?
Didn't this same senerio play out in the last local government elections ran by the PLP?

That goes both ways! If you happen to be in an area that did not vote for the government of the day and councilors who support the government of the day are elected then they will victimize those they perceive to have voted against them at the national level.
Local government was supposed to have been neutral but...... dis da Bahamas man, you know anyone here dat is neutral? :)

A well thought out response.
bahamiangoddess 06-26-08, - 01:22 PM I hope that those elected officials realize that, it is a good opportunity to better their individual communities regardless of party affilitation.
The concept of Local Government was to allow the people to make some of their own decisions and do what is best for them. It represents a form of self governance.
However, visionless, selfish people on the Councils, have effortlessly manipulated Local Government for their personal benefit.
Sometimes it is best when others make decisions for you!

They don't come outright and say it but everyone knows :) I can tell you I don't go for that.
I was the first one to vote in our polling division this morning and cast my ballot for the people who in my eyes would do the better job, regardless of any political affiliation that they might have :)
