D'Aguilar—Time for consumer confidence index

The Chamber head is suggesting the time has come for a public polling agency, one independent of the government and prepared to develop a consumer confidence index. That handy tool is relied on by governments worldwide to track the effectiveness of economic stimulus efforts like those rolled out in Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham's 2008-09 Budget.
"It would allow the administration to directly gauge how people feel about the economy, whether they're businesses or consumers," Bahamas Chamber of Commerce head Dionisio D'Aguilar told Guardian Business Wednesday. "With this knowledge, it can decide the need for any stimulus package and then it can also gauge the effectiveness of a stimulus package in easing consumer concerns." ....
