Democratic presidential candidate, Senator Barack Obama, is promising 100 per cent debt relief for the Caribbean if he becomes the next leader of the United States.
That would translate for Jamaica into a $29 billion write-off in central government debt to the US, a small portion of the near $500 billion of foreign debt the island is carrying, Jamaica's finance ministry figures show.
Policy to be pursued
While Obama himself did not reveal that plan for the region, his foreign policy adviser, Dan Restrepo, told the Government and tourism officials attending the Caribbean Tourism Organisation conference here that this is one of the policies to be pursued by Obama if elected to office.
"As you all well know, the poorest countries in the world, including some in the Caribbean, suffer under the weight of enormous external debt. Barack Obama wants to see a 100 per cent debt cancellation for the world's heavily indebted poor countries, including all such countries in the Caribbean," he said.

nobody cares, that got nothing to do with the Bahamas.

YOU don't care, but other people do. Also, sensible people can see that The Bahamas will benefit indirectly, if other Caribbean countries have their debts written off.
Think (if you can) of what governments of those countries can do with the money they don't have to pay back to the US, to develop the communities in their country.

Doesn't matter, it should be posted in the International Section as there is not 1 single mention to the Bahamas in that post. That is to do with Jamaica. So it is simply SPAM. Dummies like Kueg dont quite get it, they just want argue anyway cause they full of hate.

LOL nice one spam. I think he means erryone else focused on bigger n more "sensational" issues n threads though Kuegn.
Good point bout the implications for many of us in the region though. I'm tryin to get a pulse on the underlying issues many people caught up in the hype are overlooking. Well dat was da orgin of da post....So wut u tink?
Given Obama's stance on the US economy, the way 4ward for it and what he proposes to do, which will have major effects on our economy in terms of the financial sector and our "offshore appeal", there is no doubt that such a promise of debt relief could help in our attempts to refocus our nation on other industries and our own infrastructure.
But will it be interpreted as a decoy or some appeasement for the other plans he has that will affect the region by those that are wary of some of his policies that will affect us? Or is Obama really coming with changes the collective world seems to need?
& even IF it happens (regardless of why)...would OUR powers that be use that burden relief to strengthen the economy or other industries for us as a nation to rely on(perhaps by providing some kind of relief to its own citizens (& while we at it...maybe begin to boost to our seemingly pre-colonial infrastructure issues lol)

i DID read the OP, and several editorials in analysis of obama's comments. if the program actually takes off, it will in fact heartily impact the bahamas with regard to its relations with hispaniola.

then again, why bother arguing with a simpleton? just because someone respects another community's choices that are different from their own (cuba, africa, venezuela, UK) does NOT a communist make.

yes you are as small minded as they come, next to wa-cha-ma-call-it, living on that slow backward island .. hiding from civilization .. supporting the murderous communists. good luck with that. 1+1 = 2, but you say 1+1 = 4. Simpleton you call him, sounds like you just dragged that word out of your potcakes bubby.

as opposed to you, supporting the murderous capitalists?

spamster, we've cut you a LOT of slack around here, but your small-mindedness and ability to call names is getting pretty tired.

go play in your beloved traffic. a few carbon monoxide fumes have your name written all over them.
