View Full Version : Florida Sales Tax Reform Update canesfins 07-01-08, - 11:31 AM http://www.thenassauguardian.com/bixex/356490892289686.php bannabread 07-01-08, - 11:42 AM I guess we'll have to get our stuff from some place else if that's so, talk about shooting ones self in the foot. canewry 07-01-08, - 11:47 AM we spoke on this before. In fact, Bahamian businessmen were lobbying against this some time ago...apparently to no avail. Perhaps we can purchase our good further north, but I wonder if that would in fact be cheaper. canesfins 07-01-08, - 11:51 AM we spoke on this before. In fact, Bahamian businessmen were lobbying against this some time ago...apparently to no avail. Perhaps we can purchase our good further north, but I wonder if that would in fact be cheaper. Bahamian businesses have not lobbied against this, they were given the opportunity but decided at the time not to lobby against the proposal. bahamiangoddess 07-01-08, - 11:51 AM I hope this law is not repealed! Bahamians can make a difference if they threaten to boycott shopping in the U.S, but I know that will never happen. They are now buying tickets in droves to go away for the summer! Canes sometimes I shop in Jethro's for groceries and because I am using my Bahamian passport I pay no taxes. Am I right in saying that the removal of this exemption will mean, that I will pay taxes in all of the stores which previously allowed the exemption because the goods were for export???. bannabread 07-01-08, - 11:52 AM we spoke on this before. Perhaps we can purchase our good further north, but I wonder if that would in fact be cheaper. Allot of businesses already are, I was surprised. Apparently the US is a real hassle to deal with these days. I have no idea as I only buy local, never did get going to Miami and all the hassle that comes with it thing.. canesfins 07-01-08, - 11:59 AM Allot of businesses already are, I was surprised. Apparently the US is a real hassle to deal with these days. I have no idea I only buy local, never did get going to Miami.. I have been intrumental in this issue - no active lobbying in the US at this time - they had an opportunity when it was in front of the Commission and that was the best chance to defeat it - but there was a decision not to do that. canesfins 07-01-08, - 12:00 PM I hope this law is not repealed! You are correct - I think that Jethro's is not doing the right thing procedurally unless the ship to the exporter directly. I have no idea I only buy local, never did get going to Miami.. This always a litle perplexing, I support equality across the board. If products are purchased in any given district, state or country you should be responsible for the surcharge or tax that is applied to that population regardless of your origin or nationality. If you purchase in Florida you pay Florida sales tax just like everyone else. Case in point should a non Bahamian buying property in the Bahamas be granted an exemption to real estate sales tax because he or she is not a Bahamian citizen. Think about it:dgi: bahamiangoddess 07-01-08, - 12:53 PM You are correct - I think that Jethro's is not doing the right thing procedurally unless the ship to the exporter directly. I do not believe that a lot of the business people, especially in the family islands knows what is happening. Whenever I go to Jethro's, there are dozens and dozens of pallets wrap and packed for shipping to various family islands. I have seen the names of plenty petty stores from almost all islands on those pallets. This will be a blow to many family island businesses and will cause a significant increase of the cost of goods. I believe that many of the business people are lazy and hope that the government will fight their battles. Then again, they will simply pass the increase on the customers. If repealed, this could have far reaching effect for the Bahamian Consumers. bahamiangoddess 07-01-08, - 01:02 PM This always a litle perplexing, I support equality across the board. Think about it:dgi: Conch, I would rather call the sales tax exemption an incentive. Bahamians spends billions in South Florida annually and part of it is because of this. I am sure businesses like Jethro's will get a "punch in the stomach", if Bahamians no longer do business with them. Visit that store and see the interaction between Bahamians and the staff, the relationship has been there for decades. I frequent that store because of the no tax policy and I believe other Bahamians do the same. The minute they stop, I will no longer drive all the way to Miami, when Sam's and Costco has the same goods. bannabread 07-01-08, - 01:38 PM Case in point should a non Bahamian buying property in the Bahamas be granted an exemption to real estate sales tax because he or she is not a Bahamian citizen. Think about it:dgi: This happens now, it's not "supposed to" but it does happen especially with very large investors.. The Exotic One 07-01-08, - 01:54 PM So seeing that The State Legislature has no love for "those who live outside of the US be cause they cannot vote".. I hope this legislature takes into consideration the amount of American that live outside of the US in these same Caribbean countries.. Americans who can yes "vote by proxy" to elect Presidents and the like.. Can u say absentee ballot?:cutie: |
